Try the Canny Mans in Morning Side Road, old traditional pub that serves food. Got plenty of character and cobwebs and no chrome. Plenty of Indian Chinese and Thai restaurants in close vicinity.

Edinburgh is bouncing .Never stops. The White Oak is 'trad' and you'll find a gig in there sometimes, too. Rose Street,as the others said, has loads. I went to Ed 'gh to get a visa for India (there's an Indian High Commision Office there, not such long queues as in London) and booked a bed in a Backpacker for three nights. One day I actually used it ! In the daytime. Zonked out! There's all-night buses to get you back if you're flaking by 4am.Enjoy. |

Here's how to kill two birds with one stone :-)
Go to Victoria Street and have a few drinks in the Bow Bar. It's a traditional pub with no music etc and the TV is only on for selected sports events. There is a range of eight cask ales and six keg beers including a couple of Czech lagers. If you're into malt whisky then you have a choice of over 160! The Bow has recently won prizes for it's beers and whiskies including Edinburgh Pub of the Year (2006) and is one of the top 60 whisky pubs in the world.
Then when you are ready for a meal, visit Khushi's which is less than 100 yards up the hill. This is the oldest (and many say the best) Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Khushi's has recently moved to these premises which are quite palatial. They don't serve alcoholic beverages but you can take a carry out from the Bow. I don't think there is a corkage charge.
Here's a couple of links:
