Its not unreasonable to judge people. If you never made judgements about others you could find yourself being fleeced of money, sold shoddy goods, or even in danger of your life. Being sceptical about others is perfectly natural even necessary.
What is unfair however is to Judge others without knowing anything about them. I have no problem with anyone who comes to Liverpool, gives it a go, and doesn't like it. Not everyone will.
What really annoys me is when people repeat the tired old rhetoric about Liverpool, and they think they are being funny. Like we haven't heard the hubcaps joke before. You know they haven't been within 100 miles of the city, only know what they read in some red top, or what their mates tell them in the pub.
When you go on holiday and notice people pulling their valuables closer to them when they hear you speak is not a nice experience, and is akin to racism.
The only thing we can do is repeat the facts. You are more likely to have your car stolen in Manchester, be burgled in Bristol, or be mugged in London than in Liverpool. In fact the latest Government statistics show that Liverpool has the lowest crime for any big city in the UK.
Now its not our fault if people refuse to believe this, some people enjoy their ignorance, and nothing we ever say is going to stop them holding their prejudices. |

I agree with you, and hear the same said about Birmingham people. I now live in Cornwall, and we have many visitors throughout the summer months. However, the part of Cornwall I live in is rather posh, and we only ever seem to get middle class Londoners here, who whine, and moan, and try to push us around. I look after a lovely cottage in Polruan, S.E. Cornwall, and you can GUARANTEE the posh Londoners leave the place like a tip, wheras, when we (rarely) get families with "accents" we hardly have to clean up after them, but we just don't get enough people in our neck of the woods with accents, and have to put up with the London "nobs" Take no notice of the ignorant to$$ers, who criticise you for your accent, I have a broad Birmingham accent, and have NEVER stolen, or cheated anyone, and if you come to my village for a holiday, I will welcome you at least. |

Not only should they be judged but found guilty, hung, drawn & quartered. |

Although I've always lived on the West Coast of the US, I also have heard people here putting people from Liverpool down, even moreso after the 'invasion' of the Liverpool Four, known as The Beatles. You would think that may have been from older people who were put off by the shaggy hair and style in the 60s, but people still do it. They also put down people who use the term East Enders, thinking they are one and the same with no outlapping ... I, however am a true Anglophile, and I have known several people from Liverpool ... all intelligent, college educated, sophisticated people whose 'Liverpool accent' wasn't bad at all (as most aren't, too) ... so I suppose all we can do is try to 'change people's minds' about Liverpool and its people, even though that may be one person at a time. |

It's because they are envious.
Liverpudlians are lively, sociable, popular and friendly, which upsets stuffed shirts from toffee-nosed parts of the country who are are universally reviled for their snobbery, hostility to strangers and mean-spiritedness.
Their city, town or backwater might be much richer in money, cars and jobs, but compared to Liverpool they are invariably bleak, dull places with ugly 1960s buildings, awful pubs, distant theatres (if any) even more distant concert halls, conservative, unfriendly (and violent) drinkers. Sitting in and watching rubbish on the telly is all there is to do in the evenings.
I blame the bad reputation of Liverpudlians (as thieves, cheats, workshy spongers, etc.) on the crude stereotyping 'humour' of Bleasdale, Russell, Tarbuck, Cilla, Redmond, Carla Lane et al, who all made millions for themselves from this defamation but stigmatised an entire city and its natives for a generation at least.
(later...) Well said, Maid in Cornwall! |

Yes me too! I hate that. I'm not from Liverpool, but I have a lot of family from there. And not a single one of them is dull. Or rude. Or unpleasant in anyway.
Same can't be said for the rest of my family (the non Liverpool folk) |

Yes people from Liverpool are great, its usually uneducated people that would come out with such a broad generalization, however Liverpool is the place to be. |

I find it a little sad and sometimes quite irritating. I've heard most of the insults, which concentrate on the negative side of Liverpool. So far as the capital of culture is concerned unlike many major cities most of what you may term as "culture" is not found in one area but spread across the city and surrounds in all sorts of places. I just wish that sometimes people would come on here from outside and relate some of the help they have been given from unexpected sources when they have had a problem. I admit that people hear are an odd mixture but they are on the whole good and generous hearted |
