No no no no no.
That's an urban legend.
In the UK, they're called American muffins.
No one knows where these things were invented.
Tooodles!
Update: Do you know what they call swiss cheese in Switzerland?
Cheese!
lol
Update: Notice the star. I love giving them out, unlike some people on this site. |

A muffin in Scotland is quite different from what the English call a muffin |

noitall Yorkshire England (U.K.)

Muffin or American muffin.
Crumpets or Pikelets are a different kettle of fish altogether |

As you can see the original name was 'muffin'. But now we HAVE to say English muffin because we have all those 'foreign' blueberry or chocolate thingies! ;-) |

In England you get muffins, they are not quite the same as the American "English Muffin" as muffins in England actually taste OK and not like cardboard. It just like "London Broil" there's no such thing in London thankfully. |

an english muffin is just called a Muffin, I find it so annoying when I order a Muffin and get one the awefull american muffin things.
and not to be confused with a crumper, or Pikelet, which has holes in it. |

Crumpets are much better than muffins.
By the way, Muffin the mule is illegal. |

Assuming you are American, what you would call an English Muffin, we (the English) would call a crumpet. (Round thick thing with butter on; appears in the Mary Poppins books).
To us, a muffin is a muffin. Kind of a glorified cupcake.
Nb, in case you hadn't realised, a few people have put innuendo in their answers, as Muffin can be slang for sex, and Crumpet slang for someone posh and good looking. |

I'm Canadian and I miss the "English muffins" from back home because they are crunchier and totally different than the ones here in England, which are very soft and dough-like. Crumpets are not like muffins at all so ignore those crumpet people. They are made from a crepe-like dough and are just shaped like an English muffin. Also, I recall getting many different varieties of English muffins in Canada with great flavours and even extra crunchy ones. But I just had one of those dough-like things because I've got used to them now. |

Muffin is correct but the confusion usually arises between crumpet and muffin with most people who are not familiar with the two items. |

Some people mix up a muffin and a a crumpet. A muffin doesn't have holes to soak up the butter. An American muffin is like a big cake and a different thing altogether. |

We call a muffin a muffin. |

They call them muffins, just like New Yorkers don't call cheesecake "New York Style" cheesecake - it's just cheesecake.
They don't have what you think of as English muffins, which is sort of a bready crumpet. |

Here think what you think of as a muffin English call a crumpet. When I think of a muffin I think of a blueberry, chocolate chip muffin in a paper cup thing, which I think of as being American. I think it's the same word, different food, like pie. You mean a thing that looks like a small fat pancake? I maybe have this wrong! Look up crumpet though, if your ar$ed. I'm Scottish so I'm not really qualified to answer. |
