Spent time all over England and Scotland. Most of the people are friendly and helpful, especially if you are respectful of them and their country.
Tips for traveling:
1. Try and learn as much about the culture and customs as possible before travel. We speak a similar but not identical language. For example, what we call "pants" the Brits understand as "underpants".
2. Respect the people and their language, customs and habits. You are a guest there. Be polite.
Check http://www.alltravelengland.com/England/Car_Rental/Driving_Tips.htm
and http://england.visualenc.com/general/hotels.html
for more information useful to first time visitors.
Be aware that pubs have a social custom all their own. If you expect to enter a pub, learn what to do BEFORE going in. Its VERY different from bars in the US.
English food is much better than its reputation.
Not wearing Bermuda shorts with sandals and socks is a good idea in England. Also anywhere else.
Be curious about England and its people. They'll help you learn about it and it will help you enjoy your trip even more.
We've enjoyed our time in the UK so much that we'd like to retire there when the time comes. |

Trust me the problem is not soley with London. Ask people from Bagdad, or Lahore, or Toronto . . .
I agree with the chap who mentioned civility, One ought to try not to gaffaw at peoples tiny cars, small houses, and generally smaller incomes in shall we say Cornwall when the opportunity exists to mock the lack of electricity, running water from a hand pump, and an annoying habit for intimacy with the barnyard animals in lets say North Carolina. It would truly seem that much more is shared than divisive. ;-) |

There are people in America who don't like Americans. Many of the Brits are opposed to America right now because of the war going on in Iraq. There government has supported America in the war and like many Americans, they don't understand why we did it. Don't be rude, don't expect them to follow your customs, you are going to their country so have some respect for the people and their culture and you will be fine. |

london is multi cultural. it may be that a large amount dont like the regime in usa, or the loudness and arrogance of usas people. when a president blankly refuses to address the problems of the environment, i cannot carry much respect for his/their character. As for the invasion of afghanistan and iraq tis deeply deeply shameful. history should be learnt, super powers are like spoilt children they grow up to be bad people. |

I think people around the world HATE America not Americans.
Some people confuse the two things.
I'm not an American but work & live in the US. |

I travelled to London a few years ago and received a warm welcome from both colleagues (it was a business trip) and strangers alike.
If I had to give any advice on your (presumed) upcoming trip, it would be to remember that you are a visitor in their country. While our cultures are very similar, there are differences. Don't poke fun at their culture, and if you gaffe, be sure to apologize. I guess the long and the short of it is: behave civilly and you will be welcomed.
I'd say this would hold true to any travel, whether it be half-way across the globe, or just a couple of states over. |
