Lets say for instance a tiger decided to take up residence in a bears den and lives there - does that make the tiger a bear?
Nope - its all in the breeding - a tiger is a tiger still no matter were he lives :-) |

I think you have to be born in england to call yourself English. I have lived in the USA now for 15 years, but I am a Brit and will always be a Brit and proud of it. I will never be American as I also choose to keep my British citizenship and passport
I am classed here as a resident alien, I am thinking of growing some antenna and inventing a new language. |

You can be English if you are born in England. If you have come from another country and applied for and received a British Passport, then you are a British Citizen. Congratulations. |

As an incomer you can become British (if you get citizenship/passport etc) but you can't become English - that's to do with blood, heritage etc.
I'm one who could be called English but I usually prefer to call myself British (because I've got Welsh etc blood) and actually I feel more European than anything else most of the time.
Good luck to you whatever you are. If you like living in England, I hope you continue to be happy there. It shouldn't matter what you are. |

Sure mate...forget all the other xenophobes...i now pronounce you an Englishman.
Saying that, you now have to become a Xenophobe yourself and immediately despise all other people just on principle. |

I was born in England...but have Ukrainian blood and Family.
So what am I? Ukrainian or English?
My Husband is Nigerian. Our son is 1/2 Nigerian, 1/4 Ukrainian and 1/4 English. So the three of us, are we an English family? A Nigerian family? Or a Ukrainian family?
(Oh and my Father's Jewish with Russian roots....and?)
I feel our environment AND our blood roots make us who we are. Not one without the other.
We should all celebrate each of our back round and cultural impurities! Nobody is truly, purely from just one place.
It all adds to the 'flavour' of this country that could be quite boring without it.
Welcome by the way!! |

NEVER!
Why anyway?
And what does it mean (for you) to be english anyway?
Short guide for becomming English:
1) Go from work directly into a pub, order 10 lager, drink yourself uncocious and start a fight.
2) The only conversations allowed are:
World cup 1966
5:1
We won the war
Germans are Nazis
3) Hate Scottish
4) Hate Germans
5) Hate Scottish Germans
6) Hate everyone
7) You have to be a Hooligan!
Select a team (not Arsenal because the are too good) and shave your head and colour them accordinly
8) Hate every other football team
9) Hate Australians
10) Pretend you're a cockney.
Hope that helps! |

This quandary would be solved if there was such a thing as English citizenship. While we're waiting, Meggy's rule of thumb is:
If you have British citizenship and your closest connection in the UK is with England (and living here is a close connection), then you're English.
Like any nationality, that can go alongside any other citizenship or national identity you still hold.
Either way...Willkommen! and Have Fun!! :-) |

No matter how long you live in England or how good is your level in English, people here will never accept you as an equal and you'll be able to notice that even if they dont mention it. I'm talking about the majority of course. People here dont accept as compatriots even people from other towns than their own so what do you expect? |

Dontblamethedamned - if your fictional Englishman has drunk himself unconcious, how is he then going to start a fight? Fool.
You are English if you feel it, if you want to be. I'm not sure about the instant you touch down, but once you've been living here for a while and are behaving as an Englishman then why should you be regarded differently? You could always apply for British citizenship, although I believe you have to have lived here for 5 years at least.
Of course, that all depends on whether or not you want to be an Englishman, you didn't say... |

i would say not yet but you could be. this is the great thing about the english. we are the americans of europe. we do not have any roots that we are convinced of that make us something other than an inhabitant of the country we now reside in. i know there is irish blood in me, so what ? there is probably celtic, roman, norse, anglo-saxon blood in me. i regard each with equal contempt. i reckon my celtic / viking half breed great, great, great, great , great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandmother was raped by the descendant of a descendant of a great, great, great, grandson of a woman raped by a roman soldier. let's all get real about genealogy... we are not all descended from royalty. personally, i am fcuking pround of that fact.
scottish and welsh people obviously think they have some greater racial purity than us english. do you know what ? i doubt it. |
