England is a country.

The United Kingdom is made up of the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island.

Great Britain is the actual physical island in which you will find England, Wales and Scotland (Northern Ireland is on the neighbouring island of Ireland -- try saying that line fast!)

United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland.
Great Britain comprises of just England, Scotland and Wales.
England is just another word for a second-rate cricket team!

we are a small country so we give ourselves lots of titles to make us sound big

Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England make up the United Kingdom and
Great Britain is made up of Scotland, Wales and England,
if you are in England it'd be best to just refer to England, people who use United Kingdom or Great Britain just to describe England may not know their geography well hence why they use all the terms synonymously

hetty d
The United Kingdom is England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland.
Southern Ireland is not connected with the other countries politically and is therefore not included in this.
If you just want to say England just say England!

The United Kingdom is made up of different parts so it includes, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. It also has links to the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the offshore spots around the coast line. It is united under the Union Jack and has the Monarchy.
England on it is own has its borders with Scotland and Wales and they have some devolved governmental powers.
It is confusing, but Little Britain is funny!

ZYGGY
United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland.
Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.

If you are refering to England, call it England, everybody will understand where you are referring to.

I live in Wales and when I go abroad I have to explain that Wales is part of Great Britain.

BrilliantPomegranate
United Kngdom is Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
Great Britiain (I think) is from the French so as not to confuse with the French region Brittany (in French Bretagne) but French for Great Britain is... i've forgotten

England is NOT (correctly) known as United Kingdom or Great Britain; England, Great Britain and the UK are NOT the same country.

It is possible to be from the United Kingdom, but not from either England or Great Britain. Similarly, it is possible to be from Great Britain, but not from England. It is even possible to be from England, but not from Great Britain (if you're from the Isle of Wight). But it is not possible to be from England and not from the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is a geographical term: it's the big island on which most of England, Scotland and Wales are situated (I say 'most of' because there are smaller islands belonging to each of these countries). The United Kingdom, on the other hand, is a political term. It is the independent state that contains Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England. Each of these can be considered countries, nations, or merely parts of the UK.

The Republic of Ireland (sometimes known as Eire) is an entirely different state.

The term British Isles, to confuse things further, is another geographical term that includes all the islands that make up the UK, as well as the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man (which is not in the UK, but is dependent on it). Irish people tend not to like this term, for obvious reasons.

I would add, incidentally, that the terms North America, USA and America also do not all apply to the same place. Canadians are North Americans, but not from the USA, and Chileans are American, but not from North America or the USA.

England is part of the united kingdom (UK), which is usually referred to as Great Britain. Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England make up Great Britain or the UK. I would use UK to say were you live.
