I visited the UK for the first time (from Australia).?

I hired a car and got off the tourist track. I couldnt escape the feeling that England was fixated on the past. The England of a hundred years ago was a wonderfull place, but I felt as if the entire country was a fighting tooth and nail to stay there. What do others think?

Its targeted to a particular age and class of society, whilst the younger look to America.

I think you may have noticed the historical aspects of England, because it has such a vast history in comparison to what you are used to in Australia. We have a lot of historical places and architecture, whereas Australia is relatively modern in comparison. I don't mean any offence by this - I was in Australia last week and found it to be a beautiful country, but everything was modern and new in comparison with our history.

In this world, I do not think that wanting to hold on to some of the past is such a bad thing, I for one find it comforting to know that we are not totaly embroiled in the now and the future.

I think you're a bit barmy to be honest. England is a very old country!

I think you just went round with you're eyes closed.
England is a beautiful place and most of us are proud of our heritage.
We have technology up to our back teeth and it's nice to touch down with how far we have come now and again.

England has a vast culture - both old and new. The modern culture of England is sometimes difficult to identify and separate clearly from the culture of the wider UK as we are so intertwined. However, the traditional and historic heritage defines us and is something that we would like to retain. Otherwise it won't be the UK that you cannot clearly identify & separate England from, but from Europe.

Austrailia is a fairly new country...you don't have as much history as us, we are proud of our history..i also think people care deeply about history and their surroundings in this country..and are proud of that.

You also have to consider we have an aging population in this country which could contribute to your opinion.

its our heritage and we're proud of it. we also have many modern acheivements which we are also proud of, for example the millenium wheel in london (forget the dome that was a mistake!). we have a new wembley stadium. we are in the process of building an olympic village ready to host the games on 2012

With 4,000+ odd years of history I think it would be difficult to avoid the past here.
