Black Gecko

I walked ~0.5 miles down an electrified train track in south-east England. In retrospect, what were the risks?

I missed the stop at my hometown at about 12:15am and didn't know my way around the roads and my mobile phone was dead, so I followed the rail track back from the next stop, thinking I was less likely to get lost finding my way home. After about half a mile I jumped a fence and followed the motorway that I knew led into town. It was pitch black all the way and I could barely see bar the moonlight and far-off motorway light pollution.

Facts:

No trains were scheduled to run on the 3 mile stretch from 1am to about 5am, although I now appreciate the possibility of freight trains running me over.

It was two tracks, side by side.

Third electrical rails were on the far left and far right (left of left track and right of right track).

Had a train came, there was about 3-5m of clearance either side of the tracks ending in fencing that I could have ducked into.

I walked in between the two rails for the majority of the distance, except on one occasion where I crossed the leftmost electrical rail to try and reach the motorway, but slid into a shallow ditch and turned back over the electrical rail again and onto the tracks to continue walking.

I stepped over the electrical tracks about 4 times to get about.

In retrospect this was an insanely risky and stupid thing to do, but I'm curious exactly what fate I have tempted? What could have gone wrong? How lucky am I to be alive? It's a bizarre and quite disturbing thought but my morbid curiosity has the better of me if only to teach myself to never do something like that ever again.

If I had tripped or otherwise touched the live rails, would I have died?

Are the rails in the south-east top, side or bottom-charged (done a bit of reading on the rails)?

Had you trodden on the live rail there is a good chance you would have been killed due to the high voltage running through it.
On this sort of track the outside thicker rail would have been live as this is the conductor raul mounted on insulators
Electricity is not generated by the trains engine into the rails as another answer suggests but the rails do carry a minor voltage for signalling purpose
A funny sort of question as you have noted a few safety points as well.
There is a lot more to this but that is the basics.
Yes you probably would have died!

You should treat them as 'Live' at all times. If you had stepped or fell on the live rail, you would most likely be dead.
When walking on a rail line, you always have to walk 'facing traffic' So as you can see trains coming towards you. Of course some tracks are 'bi directional', so you have to keep looking back and forwards all the time. Because of the speed, a train can be on you before you realise.
It can be very dangerous walking along rail lines, even if you have had training.

jackson
as a surge of electricity usually effects the brain before it kills you i can only conclude you were in no danger at all.

First you were trespassing, second you might have been elctrocuted and third you might have been hit by a train.

you havent said wot age you are so I assume you are a teenager by your irresponsible actions? Even if the rails had been good old fashioned non-electric ones or it had been a disused railway, are you completely insane !! I wont list the multitude of things that COULD have happened to you because I am sure you are only too aware of what sort of things happen to people walking alone after dark nowadays. Have you never heard of payphones? As if the railway line wasnt bad enough you then proceeded to walk along the motorway !! Words fail me honestly they do !! If it ever happens again then speak to the staff on the train before you get off and they will phone you a taxi or contact a friend for you.

jammer
You could have got lost.

Monkey Hanger
1. Electrocuted

Very sadly, today, there is in the news this article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/sussex/7807285.stm
about a 16-year-old died from electrocution on a railway.

nobody would have been around to call for help in case you needed it.
what if you went missing, nobody would even know where you were. you should use a public phone to let some body know or call a taxi.
im sure i wouldn't do that, id call a taxi or somebody. Duh.

mj1112
i believe the electricity is actually generated by the trains engine..and the rail is the conductor...so if that is the case then you were in no danger.....you might want to check this!!!

citrusbingbong
There's no electricity in the tracks at all. It's in the cables overhead.
