I think you would find a warm welcome over here.
Whilst there has been ill feeling towards America in certain parts of Europe I have never really felt it in the UK.
I think people generally thought of Bush as an idiot(sorry if that offends but it really is the case) but we have a shared history and anyone with any sense would realise that.
I'm sure some people perceive Americans in certain ways which aren't true and it's also true in reverse.

I would say an awful lot of people are fascinated by American culture and have an almost romantic view of the states.

We get plenty of Americans here in Liverpool I've always enjoyed chatting to the few I've met.

I'd love to see America and hope you won't be put off coming over here by a few people who let prejudice color their outlook.
(See I even left the 'u' out of colour to make you feel at home).

Well like in any culture you will meet people who resent you simply for where you come from. However the general feeling in Britain is against America as a country and government and the way they have affected the world. So unless you're George Bush or Dick Cheney, you should be fine.

t
I have been to England several times and have never had an issue. Just be polite. American's are known to be rude, so set an example and don't be. If you want accent...get out of London and travel the countryside - the further North West you go the better it gets. Just go.

Not true, british people are really nice.
Like anywhere in this global society these days, most times if you are nice to people, they will be nice in return.

My advice, save your pennies, look up some tourist information, and just go. You won't regret it.

I am british and have many american friends, on the whole the british do not have an issue with americans, if anything they would embrace your presents.

Pop your bottom over the pond you will have a blast!!!

I think it's more friendly rivalry on the internet, I must admit us Brits love winding you Americans up! But Seriously you'd be very welcome in the UK.

Kris

whoever told you that is a b*llsh*tter
because to be honest we don't mind American people we just don't like your government :)

besides my mum is American and she is groovy :D
British people are really nice, I'm not British in fact Australian/American

Also first answer

when you go clubbing the girls are wearing really short skirts with cleavage!
the men seem to like it

and no British don't drink tea all the time more like beer
they don't work all the time
this is all stuff i thought they did before i came here lol

Why When How

to say British people don't like Americans is like saying all Americans are fat and carry guns. We are all different. Some like Americans, some don't

Also if you are going to London, there are so many nationalities there, the chances of meeting a Londoner are are only 1 in 4.

Hope you have a good trip, London is a great place to visit.

Not true at all!!!! The onyl banter between them is for comedy effect nothing serious or anything like that!!
Brits and Americans actually really get a long!!
Get booking and come see us!!! :)

I have been to England several times and have never been mistreated. Of all the countries in Europe, England and America probably have the most in common. I look at the English as sort of like cousins. Not exactly the same as us, but with a lot of similiarities. In England, you'll see a lot of familiar things: cottage cheese, English muffins (yeah, that's what they are called over there), fried eggs, porterhouse steak, mashed potatoes. The reason there are similarities is bc many of the early Americans either came to the US from England or were of English descent. Overall, I would say that English ppl are very polite (but like in all big cities, they are pressed for time during the work day and might seem a little harried). English ppl like American culture too-- movies, music. I heard though that when Johnny Carson's tonight show was broadcast in England many years ago, alot of the ppl there didn't understand the jokes.

Not true!
They have incredible hospitality to all their tourists..
The British are overall friendly people, they're just like your average American.
However, they dress very conservatively, and will give you the stink eye if you dress like many American women do.. which means TOO TIGHT for your TOO BIG hiney jeans.. shirts that reveal too much cleavage, anything like that.
They're really friendly, that overgeneralization has got to go!

Angel
The English are not just the British,

The British are English, Scottish & Welsh,

What do you think of has a British Accent? English, Scottish or Welsh?

I can only talk about the English, and most English People like Americans.

We like to have an affectionate poke at America as a nation, yes that is true but we don't hate them. We are puzzled and amused by the obesity, eccentricity and trailer trash of your nation.

However, those who actually manage to get a passport and realise that there is more to the world than the USA are welcomed with open arms. We also like the American accent (except that one where they say "like" after every word). Us Brits like to wind up Americans because our humour is dry and subtle whereas we believe that Americans need everything spelled out for them.

I say, take the plunge, travel to our fair nation of castles, history, Shakespeare, royalty, parliament and green valleys and you won't regret it.

I'm going to be honest with you. I personally find Americans too loud. They talk loud and like a lot of attention. Having said that I don't have anything against them. I'm sure if you come over here you'll find us welcoming as long as you tone your voice down.

I can't speak for English people but here in Scotland we love everybody. Why not visit us instead?

AZ
It's not that they don't like us. It's just that they don't share the same level of adoration and admiration as we do for them. One of the reasons that most of us Americans love British humor and the music and the accent is because we tend to not get a whole lot of it in the U.S. It's something different, something new. Where as the British get bombarded with American stuff constantly, so they're kinda used to it, and if you're American, it's no big deal to them.

There is a definite undercurrent of Anti-American sentiment in England, even their former Prime Minister Blair mentioned it several times in a few speeches that he did a ways back. I think this is largely the media, and politics though. As a whole, Americans are not looked very fondly on, by anyone to my knowledge, other than Americans. But most people take people at face value, and on a one on one basis, if you're cool, they're cool.

Just go, regardless of what you may believe they think of you. If you don't, you'll just be wondering "what if" for the rest of your life.

Molly.
Hi there!
Im English, and i definitely do not hate Americans, in fact i sorta admire them i guess you could say. Yeah sure you'll get a few that don't like you but most of us are really nice.
I recently met up with some Italian friends in London.

Hope this helps, good luck :)

we like winding Americans up....but its all done in jest

DJJD
No, that's not true. Of course we like Americans. English people can be a bit guarded at times, but that doesn't mean we dislike you. Come on over. try and get to see Norfolk on the far South Eastern coast. Its beautiful. We will be very glad to see you and you will love the Norfolk accent. Its like no other. lol x

Public support for the USA right now in UK is probably about 35 - 40%. Compare this to the 50% of 1776 and things are not so good. Back then we even sent money to help finance the Continental Army.

Problem is John Adams disbanded the Continental Army, so can we have our shares back with profits please? [Joking].
