Please ignore Pistons56 and the others....people who say the food is terrible are those that dont make the effort and stick to the tourist traps. Do you really think the locals would go and eat in the middle of leicester square. I think the food here is fantastic and so culturally diverse...japanese, spanish, traditional english, fusion, chinese, indian and so on. I just wish these people would shut up and look around....and dont tar the whole place just cos ur so lazy! Ok rant over....come over, I love my home country - the culture, the people (not all stiff, traditional types - my god where do these people go). Feel free to mail me for some sensible advice! x

Don't. Move to Scotland :-)

PS Bad food? Are you kidding? Everyone in the Western world eats the same food nowawdays - pizzas, curries and chinese take-aways taste the same in the UK as in the US.

I heard that they stink. you might want to try france. good luck.

Well, the English are not the friendliest people you know...

Historically, they've invaded many lands but don't like people moving into their country. So think again. If you are considering UK, Scotland might be a better choice. Scottish people are much more down to earth, not like the proud and hypocritical English.

Trust me and ignore the people who say the food is great and that Western food is all the same.

It's not. I went to Australia last year, former British colony, and the food was SO bad. The potato chips had weird flavors like Chicken, rings like Funyuns were flavored Hamburger, the Campbell soups were gross, bland British offerings, which I recognized from experience. A maid cooked for us at this place we stayed, and while she was sweet, her food was not. She never heard of marinating or spicing. I couldn't get a decent hamburger the whole time there. I don't even WANT to know what Britain is like. I had the worst Domino's Pizza ever there.

Seriously, you'd have to experience it for yourself. It's a rite of passage, and you'll lose pounds too.

*update*-I don't know if Fat Bob was sarcastic or not, but please, don't allow yourself to be deluded. Cooking and food preparation are not taken seriously in Britain and Australia. When I say it was the worst pizza I ever had, I mean it, it was a joke. A 16 year old on his first day on the job at a pizza place in America could do better. I have never had such poor food in my life. Some people, perhaps some British and Aussie, some people who think they're smart and open-minded, will delude themselves, but TRUST ME, the food is bad! People who say it isn't probably are from said countries, or never have been there, and think everywhere is like America or Canada. WRONG. You'll find out...I would never have thought so myself mates...

*another update*- I've had Chinese and other ethnic food in Australia, and it was almost tasteless and bad. Very bland. The only place that had good food was the "tourist-trap" Gold Coast. The poster unsure below sounds like she's never left Britain, which makes her biased and uninformed. She would love American food if she thinks British is the best.

Stay away, my country was once great, as the name suggests, 'Great Britain' over the last few years this country has become the sespit of the world, crime and disorder at an all time high, imigration control a joke, the police force is a scandal to behold.

Be afraid, be very afraid..........stay away

You need to pick a good area to move to if you fancy moving to England.... try getting in touch with a british estate agency, they can be really helpful and honest about where is good/bad! I read loads of negative comments about the UK, and to a point, people are right. Its expensive, the people are opinionated, and nosy, and there is a massive CHAV culture with the young people in britain. Religion is also an increasing social problem, so think hard before you make a decision. Its not all bad. It really just depends where you are. Same as most places I guess. Good luck :)

Move to Scotland, you'll like it a lot better :-)

Ignore these people bad-mouthing England, it is a really nice place, ok, you get idiots that live here, but it's the same as everywhere. If you've got your heart set on moving here, make sure you have a job and somewhere to live lined up, England is very pricey now, it also might help if you know people that live over here. I wish you luck :)

Look and get a job first. Then start house/apartment hunting, but not in central london (unless your a millionare). Get some knowledge about the city you want to live in, go there for a trip for the week or something and get to know the place, before you start moving country.

Hi! Well I suggest you arrange some temporary accommodation first before you leave, and when you get there look for a temp job. Sometimes they have longish contracts and it'll set you up while you are looking for something more permanent. I registered with Tate Recruitment and got a contract on the spot, they have heaps of work. There is plenty of accommodation, just surf the net. London is a great city, but may be a culture shock. Some days I loved it, other days I felt it was a nightmare! Yes expensive, but always stuff to do and see. You will never be bored.

OK, now to the food. I live in Australia, and have travelled everywhere, including the USA. London restaurant food is ok, and the supermarkets aren't bad, but not as much variety as Australia or the USA. And the chocolate tastes a bit different. Food in Australia can be bland, and Anglos traditionally don't use too many spices etc (most love meat and 3 veg), but the food and meat and vegies are fresh. In the US, I couldn't even buy a healthy sandwich. There was fatty junk everywhere. London has great restaurants, as does Melbourne, Australia due to the cultural diversity.

Firstcontact.co.uk can help you get started and help you open a bank account. That is what I found the hardest. Make sure you have a letter from your bank to take to the bank in England, confirming your UK address. They are mental over that.

stay away there are far to many englishmen there,.they make it very difficult these days for anyone to go and live there, except if your a fanatical muslim terrorist then you can come in easily.and get a free house healthcare, education, yes it is a great country.

Depending on your nationality and the purpose for which you wish to come to the United Kingdom, you will probably need a visa.

UKvisas ( http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk ) have a visa enquiry form on their website which can be used to determine whether you need a visa etc as well as providing details of the nearest visa section where you can make your application.

If you are interested in coming to the UK to work, details of work-based schemes can be found on the working in the UK website. This includes information for Au Pairs, Business men, Innovators and Working Holiday Makers.

I think you should take piston56's comments seriously.Even though you want to experience at least four vastly different cultures and gain some new insights,if it involves eating the worst ever Domino's pizza you'd be better just to stay at home.
