I want to move to the UK!? |
I really want to move to the UK for a little bit. I'm an American...I'm young and in a job I don't really care for so much. I've been reading on here a lot of posts that UK people write saying how it's terrible there right now but I don't want to believe this! I've always wanted to live in the UK but now I'm not so sure! I hope it's not just "grass is greener" syndrome. Living in England (in particular) is something I've just got to do ... please convince me either yes or no so I can finally make up my mind about going! If I don't go now I probably won't ever go :(
HELP! Additional Details Thanks for your advice everyone. I have visited England before (only London) and am coming back this summer to check out other areas of the country. I have been to Ireland too but so far I like England better. Preferably the south where it's a bit warmer (I'm used to real temperate weather here in NJ...don't know how I'd handle cold all the time so well).
I've only been out of University for a year. Maybe I can just find an English man and marry him and get access to the country eh? Sounds good to me!! ;) Just kidding I hear they are not so chivalrous! |

Hey Jules, (thanks for answering my question too :D)
As for living in England.
I live near Birmingham, a city in central England, and to be honest, I quite like it. I've never been to America (not yet anyway) so I can't really go into much detail about the differences between the two countries, but you say you've been here before so it doesn't really matter I suppose.
As other people have said, we are in the middle of a credit crunch at the minute and people are losing their jobs, houses etc. You say you have just come out of University, what degree do you have because this could help you get a job?
The people of England tend to look down on Americans if I'm honest with you. I love them personally and I am really interested in the cultural differences and the American way of living, but it seems that their are a lot of stuck up, pompus English people that seem to find you annoying. However, of course this is because of a stereotype people brand you with (such as us having bad teeth) and I'm sure the majority of people will accept you should you come. You get the idiots everywhere don't you really?
If I were you I'd come down and live here for 6 months, see how you find things and how you adapt to the changes. You seem really interested in England so I'm sure most people will be happy to help you find your way around (I for one would :D )
I'd love to talk to you about this in more detail, so if you wouldn't mind add me on MSN (if you have it) or send me an email on the following address, not my yahoo one as I don't tend to use it.
jamesbooth@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks, enjoy coming over to England later this year, and I'm sure if you did choose tho live here, you'd love it.

Sweetheart, don't move here because it is pretty bad at the moment, we're in the middle of a pile of sh*te, job losses, stores, businesses closing down, food and household bills sky-rocketing in price, people have no money etc. I know at least 5 people who have lost their jobs in the last month, 3 of them are worried sick now about losing their homes. Stay put until things get a little better, if ever they do under this pathetic excuse for a government!! |

I am not going to say you should or shouldn't, this is something that only you can really answer, visit england first see what its like, at least you aren't going to throw everything away on a whim
Right now we are in a recession, and we are pretty much stuffed on the work department right now so its not worth trying to get a job here, like some people say its hard enough for the english people to get a job here i don't know what the prospects are for other people
right now its a case of every man/woman for him/herself... yes take a holiday to england, maybe see what its like before you decide to just up sticks and come here... who knows you might dislike the english (doubtful as we rock)
A few places i would recommend checking out are London, Scotland, Wales or Ireland... all the places are very different to each other but all have their charms |

Well don't just up and move there! Definitely visit for a month or so, anywhere and everywhere in England that you can go visit and then make your decision. For sure after a month or two there you could decide whether or not it's a place you could see yourself living in. |

Hi there, there are alot of great cities in the South of England so don't be put off. England is a great country, the people who live here and slag it off badly have no loyalty to their own country. There are plenty of men left in this world who treat a lady with respect and kindness, you just gotta look in nice places and not nightclubs, so don't give up. Come for a six month trial period and see how you get on, bet you'll like it. I am going to Chicago in July and have been told many times it's terrible and full of gangsters, but i will go and decide for myself as i think it's a beautifu city and won't be put off by a few opinions that are from people i don't even know. What some people hate, you may love so don't be put off by it, you have to decide for yourself. If it were up to some, you'd never leave your own city. Good luck my friend. |

It'll all be about how you are going to earn a living. If you have funding, then getting a rental shouldn't be a problem, and you can stay a while as a tourist.
If you want to work, you'll need to change your visa. There are some jobs available, but we are sufferring like yourselves. You can sign on with an agency and get temporary work. If you are highly skilled (doctor, lawyer, engineer) then you can get work.
Start off by reading the site below - the ukvisas. You do NOT need to go to anywhere else to get your visa supported, do your own paperwork and you'll be successful.
Where?
Certainly have a look around yourself. In the UK London is the most cosmopolitan place, but there are plenty of places to recommend, Bournemouth, Edinburgh, Brighton, Cambridge, have a look around. |
