Yes Islands are surrounded by water. Never ask the Brits about the weather. They go to Spain and eat British food sit in bars all day then come home and say they had a great holiday and it only rained once. If you are coming for a holiday bring a rain coat and a jumper. You might not need them. What people forget 2004 was the hottest summer on record. But they were all in the pub and misted it.

Chuckledust
No, it's usually quite hot. From May to August, I would say it has been about 20 to 30 degrees for about 80% of the time. It can be a bit patchy though. There has been about three weeks this summer when it has been raining at some point in Manchester. If you're visiting, it would probably be wise to bring something waterproof, but it hasn't been particularly cold lately. I don't mind the weather. I like getting a tan in the summer, I like the snow and frost in the winter and I love the leaves in Autumn. Its good that it's varied, in my opinion.

Being surrounded by water doesn't make it cold or rainy - think Australia or Singapore.

Chris J
no. it gets pretty hot actually, especially in mid-summer, but i you go to northern england, it might be a little cooler. it also rains a lot.

The UK is in what is called the Temperate Zone - which means it is warm/cool most of the time. The Island of Britain is overcast 75% of the time.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_weather.html

Summer temperatures vary from moderate to quite hot but seldom much above about 85Farenheit.

Winters here in UK compared to most of the rest of Northern Europe are mild to very mild.

Here in London [Greenwich] where I live, the average mean temperature in the winter months of JANUARY, FEBRUARY & MARCH is about 40 to 45Farenheit - cold but not freezing.

What to wear?

MONTHS & clothes
January, February, March - anarak, woolly jumpers, corduroy trousers, boots, hat, scarf. Winter rags in other words but not like you were in Canada.

MONTH & clothes
April, May - occasional warm or even hot days - Spring fashions, but keep a warm item in your bag, a jumper, pullover etc. Spring clothes temp to about 60Farenheit sometimes up to 70F on a good day.

MONTH & clothes
June, July & August - summer lightweights, but be prepared for rain.

Note: London gets less rain than Roma - fact.

MONTH & clothes
September, October, November and December - an old Music Hall jokes goes, "winter draws on" - and so it does. You might experience what we call an Indian Summer here in UK. This is when August continues and carries on well into September and sometimes even into October. Generally, Autumnal/Fall type clothes, fog, rain etc., esp in November. September is the month of mushrooms here in UK which usually mean a lot of fog and damp but mild.

You can check the weather in central London any time at the Trafalgar Square webcam
http://www.camvista.com/england/london/trafsq.php3

Remember, you do not get William Shakespeare's "Green and Pleasant Land" without rain, but not every day. Just be prepared for it.

An American I met recently in central London asking the way to somewhere told me he loved the rain in London because where he comes from in Arizona, well, you hardly ever get rain. He's right. London comes to life in the rain - reflections, that's what it's all about.

London in the rain

I'm a Londoner born and bred and would not live anywhere else, even if the sun shone all day every day. London is good. We get good weather here and not nearly so much rain [about 23 inches a year] as people think.

If you want real rain, head for West Wales where they get about 88 inches of rain a year. If 60% of Wales was not 1,000 feet up in the air, the place would be flooded - permafloods, etc. But it just runs off the mountains and floods England instead.

There is a cliché that English people always talk about the weather. That's because it's never predictable. This year it has been warmish, but wet - so whilst you wouldn't need a jacket to go out a pair of wellingtons and a decent raincoat could come in handy.
May was glorious.
Yesterday was lovely, but tonight the wind is lashing rain against my window.

it is kind of like the weather you will see in Seattle, WA during the summer. it usually is sunny and will average at about 75 degrees but it will occasionally rain.

Mercer
Sometimes, It rains a lot but England is not so cold in summer.

I think the weather is pretty cool, specially in the summer!!!

rajeev s
HI,
It's depending on month means if you are going in November to January then you have to use jackets but if you are going in July then no need.

suraj_g93
some times yes sometimes no. at the moment it is cloudy but not raining. it is ad viced to take jacket. Compared to the rest of England the south is the driest. the weather ain't that great but it is nice from time to time

Of course, it depends on what you're used to. If you are from a warm or tropical place, then you should bring a light jacket or sweater (what the Brit's call a "jumper") for the evenings or a day with continued rain.

I was there during late summer, early fall---I needed the jacket in the early morning, but once the sun was up, I took the jacket off. Do bring an umbrella--it can be sunny one moment, raining the next,(just enough to soak you through) and back to sunshine in a very short time. (This was in London; as others have advised, it's a bit cooler to the north)

So, if you usually like to take something to put on when you feel a chill, then you will need it in England.

scraggy
start shedding there clothes so it cant be that bad can it its a mix it can turn very hot some days also rainy and windy

You never know what the weather will be like at any time of the year. It'll be the middle of summer and one minute it's raining, the next we've got sunshine. Right now it says on my computer it's 23C (73F) where I am...so not hot not cold. The sky's a bit grey and it looks like it going to rain. It's not windy though.
Oh, and it's usully the north that rains the most. The picture you saw was probably just a rainy day. I don't care about the weather. At least it's not the same old thing every day.

Always be packed for damp weather in England. On average, 12 out of the 31 days in July get rain. That being said, it is beautiful in the summer and you should have plenty of pleasant weather. The average temperature in London (a southern city) in July is around 71 degrees F.
