If I (an American) moved to the UK how might I be treated?

I am American, but I wonder how I might be treated if I moved to the UK?

I know that American's are seen as arrogant and ignorant, and well - we are. Which would explain why I'm so miserable here and am looking into leaving. With the world having such a negative view of American's, what are some things I could do to make people in the UK see that I am different from the stereotype?

I think with your sense of humour, you will be fine. I know an English bloke who has an American wife and she takes the P... out of us for being British as we do to her for being American. We usually take people as we find them and if you find Americans arrogant and ignorant then I think you will fit in fine. I find Americans arrogant and ignorant in their attitude to people who are meant to 'serve', for instance in a pub, shop or on holiday, they dont seem to remember their manners - please and thank you cost nothing and go a long way.

What you see on Yahoo is a bit of fun.I make many adverse comments about Americans but in reality all the Americans i have met have been fine people,I am sure that you would not receive any adverse treatment here in the UK whatsoever

Just be yourself. People over here don't like to hear too much "God bless America" and "we saved you in WWII" stuff, so just keep it real and you'll be fine....

The other 'answers' have said it all. Please come and welcome. I thing that America expect all British men to wear a bowler hat (derby) and rolled umbrella. You'll like us I promise - unless you come acros a few nutters.

Depends where you move to love. =]

A lot of people will make judgements on you, but a lot of people won't.

At first, you'll probably get a little teased for your accent, or maybe the word meaning differences - pants for trousers, biscuit and cookie, that sort of thing. I remember when a boy moved into our school a few years ago from America, and people would just talk to him like they'd known him for years - they were curious, because we come from a small town in Yorkshire where there aren't that many new people. He didn't mind one bit, because - again, with the stereotypes! xD - he had been brought up with a positive, laid back attitude that lots of Americans seem to have.

You kinda have to realise that the UK is a kind of schitzophrenic country - stuck between traditionalist values and being a big fat powerful country, we actually really want to be like America, but we don't do it so well. =P

In the end, the people who you want to know are the people who don't care where you come from, or what stereotype you were born into.

Phew, that was a long post. Sorry! =D Good luck whatever you decide to do. x

I agree with arlanymor! I make jokes sometimes on here about Americans but it's all in good humour! I'm not being serious since the Americans I have met were nice people.

Just don't act arrogant and ignorant and everyone will see that you aren't arrogant or ignorant.

You would be treated well. Besides I think many people here do like Americans but hate your government.

ok the first answer are 100% right ignore all the thumbs downs. you shouldnt worry at all

Hey :)

I find that as long as YOUR friendly and nice we will like you, we hate the stupid, annoying, arrogant and loud Americans, that always make stupid comments!

i don't think americans are arrogant or ignorant i like them i've only met about five but if they are anything to go by you americans are great just because we see a small majoroity of americans who may seem arrogant etc.doesnt mean you all are, here in england there are people like that too,but i'm sure you would like it!

AnimalLoverX
One of my mates moved from america to essex (uk) and everyone treats her the same!

veej123
You dont need to do anything. If your different, then people will see that.
People in the UK are generally accepting of anyone.
People have that view of Americans overall, but no ones gonna hold it against you personally.

TiB
You will not be treated any different,
i know plenty of Americans that live over here and they are looked at the same way as everyone else.

If anyone treats you different just because you are American, then they're not even worth bothering with to be honest.

cumbrian traveller
Despite what you might have heard the British have no problems at all with the Americans . The Americans are always welcome over here and you will have no problem adjusting to the English way of life. No need to change in any way , we accept everyone.

you will be fine most brits like americans you shouldn't listen to minorities with axes to grind.

You really have nothing to worry about. As long as you plan to work and contribute, unlike the majority of people who come to this country!

When I hear American people out and about I usually think oh cool, because it's an accent I'm not used to hearing. But I would never automatically assume they were arrogant or anything. x

It totally depends on the area you're moving into.

I'm in Manchester. When I was still in high school about two years ago, an American kid came to our school, and he was treated just like anyone else.

We did tease him a couple of times for using different words, though. For example, chips and crisps, cookies and biscuits, that sort of silly stuff. We also teased him when he wrote the date in American format.

Hi there. I moved to England from Canada 12 years ago and I can tell you that people do have a stereotypical view of Americans here. But that doesn't mean you won't get treated well. In fact, alot of Brits wish they could be more like the Americans with their laid back confidence. To answer your specific question about what NOT to do to be accepted, avoid the number one mistake that Americans (and Canadians) make: 1) Don't talk really loud and 2) Don't ask stupid questions. Of course I say this very light-heartedly and I wish you the best.

Jade
well it depends were you move because being for the UK we are also treated different by americans because some how they all think we talk the same and are really posh and drink tea but that's just london and that's a tiny place and miles away from were i live so research were you would move ?? people are different everywhere in the uk london is posh move more up north and it gets far ore common :D
hope this helped

Buddha
I don't see Americans as arrogant and ignorant. I see them as more like British people than any other nation. The main reason being that they speak the same language. You will be fine here. I think you may have formed your opinion that we think you are arrogant and ignorant through using this site. Please don't view all British people as being typical of the people who insult you on here.
