If I was born in Northumberland, but was raised and live in Newcastle, am I still a Geordie?

Me and my friend are having an argument about this. She says because I was born in Northumberland (Hexham) to be exact then I'm not a Geordie, even though I've lived in Newcastle all my life. I see myself as a Geordie - whenever I go to other parts of the country, for instance when I went to London they always recognise me as being from Newcastle straight away because my geordie accent is apparantly 'really thick' If I'm not a geordie then what am I?

You are a Geordie

TONY H
A geordie is someone from anywhere on tyneside. As hexham is on the tyne, that makes you a geordie

carina
you're a person and you are what you feel ... all your life experiences have been in Newcastle, you act and sound like one, so therefore you are ... it's splitting hairs over where your birth location was

The definition of Geordie varies widely but really, why does it matter? It's all about personal identity. If you feel you are a Geordie then you are a Geordie, no questions asked!

As Wikipedia says: "depending on who is using the term, the catchment area for Geordie can be as wide as the general north east of England, or as small as the city of Newcastle, or various ranges in between."

Now the whole of North East England might be taking it a bit far - I don't think I've heard of people from Berwick or Middlesbrough being described as Geordies. But the general point is correct.

As a Northumbrian... I would say you're a true Geordie... you were born in Northumberland but sounds like you've been Newcastle-reared!

i would say you`re a Geordie ....as for cockneys saying you have a Geordie accent really means nothing....they think people from Scumderland and Middlesboro sound Geordie

Just because you weren't born in Newcastle doesn't mean you're not a Geordie. If that's where you've always lived that surely counts for more.

I think RichB has got it spot on.

I have spoken to ppl who think you are not a geordie unless you were born (as the quote goes) ' a stone throw from the tyne' but other friends who live in Newcastle think anyone in Gateshead, North Tyneside, south tyneside & Northumberland are Geordies...

Personally I would class anyone living in Northumberland a Geordie, Northumberland is a huge area compared to tyne and wear. When you're out of the area people notice the accent first and you are recognised as a Geordie :) Thats what you are.

i was born in gateshead closer to newcastle than hexham is,and im not a geordie so you cant be,its like moving to london and saying your a cockney.you have to be born in newcastle to be geordie, wallsend and north shields arent.
