If a british sign post says say.. 'Coventry 20 miles'?

Does that mean 20 miles to the outskirts, or 20 miles to the centre? I have checked a number of sign posts out and most of them are quite a bit out.

It's supposed to be to the centre.

executioner_bolan
Usually it`s the distance to the town/city centre.
I don`t like Coventry ,I got sent there once - it wasn`t nice ,no-one spoke to me LOL.

Ali
The original milestones measured the distance to the main post office in each town. I suspect that the road signs measure to the same spot.

However, I have seen 2 signs between Stafford & Derby where the distance goes from 8 to 9 as you get closer, so I reckon there's room for error.

It means 'to the centre'.

There would be quite a lot of variation if you are going to the outskirts of a city due to some British cities being quite big.

Distances to city centres are measured to the main (Crown) post office.

it means that its approximately that distance as the distance is mesured on a map by striaght line and not by road distance

tracieisland
id thought it would be to the outskirts but from some of the answers it must be the post offices in the towns.

Christina K
Supposedly to the centre, but why would you want to go there?

The outskirts of the city/town is usually the distance shown.

It is a bit confusing I admit, but there you go - you have your answer!
