LadyMoonlight!!

If you are born in Sidcup does that make you a Londoner?

I'm Welsh and my partner was born in Sidcup and grew up in Gillingham.

To me and all other Welsh people he sounds like a Londoner (he gets called "Cockney Mike" at work) but he insists he's not a Londoner at all?

What do you all think?!
Additional Details
His dad is a Londoner - from Catford. He really sounds like a Cockney when he speaks lol and his dad even uses rhyming slang!! I've even heard my father in law say "Gertcha!" on occasions! Very Chaz n Dave . . .

He's Kentish, even a Scot would be considered a Londoner by some Welsh.

Sidcup is in the county of Kent, a home county, so he is not a Londoner. I am a Londoner but have lived in Wales for many years and find that most people seem to assume that anyone who lives in the south east are Londoners. I have even got into the habit now of when returning to England, even if only to Herts or Bucks, I say London, because most people know London but not the home county names.

Right, Sidcup is in kent, OK, and it comes under the Bexley borough council banner, as correctly stated

If you were born in kent you are referred to as, a " Kentish Man"

If you moved to kent, and was born outside of it, you are referred to as a " Man of Kent"
Bexley and Bexleyheath are also in kent, theres no such phrase as a Kenter, as posted.

So the answer to your question is: yes he is a Kentish man.

Catford however, is in london, SE6, and as no relevance what so ever to the post in question.

Sidcup and Gillingham are both in kent and outside London, so your kentish partner is not a Londoner.
I live in Scotland but was born in Chatham but everybody up here refers to me as a Londoner. Try telling a Glaswegian that he 's from Edinburgh and see what happens.

Sidcup and Gillingham are both in the county of Kent so you would be quite right in calling him a Kenter.

I'm welsh also, but my step brother is from gillingham and I know what you mean as he sounds as cockney as they come. It's hard to answer, but at the end of the day, I was born in wales, to two welsh people, and no matter where i lived after, i'd still be welsh. So if his parents are both from london, and he was born there, he'd be classed as a londoner. But peoples hearts can be in other places, and I bet his is in gillingham, so in that case, he'd be a kent boy :)

Sidcup is in kent, i live in essex, the county above but if you are from kent you are not really a londoner but near enough!

So really you might aswell just say you are if you are form there, well that is if you want to!

sidcup is in kent.but it is also in greater london.ie.you can get the red bus there.

London is not definable by the same way you can do other cities because it is not like any other city. You can say that London stops where the London postcodes end (SE, NE etc.) however that would be untrue as Croydon (technically in Surrey) is very much part of London and has London buses and is only 20 mins on the train from Victoria. Sidcup is in Kent and most of Kent is very gettable to from central London so they probably work there. I would say being a Londoner is in your mind and not in your postcode.

I'm not a Londoner but I do know that both Sidcup and Gillingham are in Kent, so he is Kentish.

EdgeWitch
Sidcup is not in London.
Catford is not cockney territory, traditionally they wouldn't be seen dead South of the River.

Nickname
Sidcup is in the London Borough of Bexley, in Greater London. It has been since 1965. Catford is in the London Borough of Lewisham, also in Greater London. The Act that effected this change removed both places from their previous counties.

Some people think that the London postal district, created by the Royal Mail in 1858, defines London, however this only covers 40% of Greater London and includes a small part of Essex, just north of Chingford. A postal address is just a routing instruction, it is not a definition of place.

Gillingham is in the Medway Towns, in Kent.

Aside from that, people often mistake the south east England working class accent for cockney, but they are somewhat distinct.

Evy
Not a Londoner if you're born in Sidcup. They have a slightly different accent, probably only apparent to us real Londoners. To be called a 'cockney' you had to born within the sound of Bowbells (East London).

Madness
Cockney is really the East end so neither he or his dad are cockney

However he was born in Kent and grew up in Kent therefore making him Kentish not a Londoner

The Accents have merged and you can't really tell the difference between a London or Kentish accent anymore

Beautiful -
sidcup is in london so yes he is a londoner
