Perth would be a good choice . Not too big- convenient for travel - good amenities - nice people - nice quiet villages about with wonderful scenery - good schools .

Easy; Inverness. It's large enough to have things going on, including lots of jobs, but small enough that you can be in the country within a few minutes drive.

You've also got Loch Ness, The Black Isle and the highlands nearby. There's an okay airport and you can access the Orkney and Shetlands Islands.

The only problem is that it's miles away from just about everywhere else in the country. But they do provide a sleeper service on the train :-)

Edinburgh or Glasgow. They are both in the Central belt.

I'd go for Oban, although it isn't technically a city.
