Buy an oyster card pay as you go and its cheaper. Cash fare is £2 per trip, but with an Oyster is £1 with day cap at £3:30 i.e. you can make many bus trips but won't be deducted more that £3:30 in a day on Oyster on a bus.
There are also daily, weekly and monthly passes that give more discount. |

£5.80 would get you a one day Travelcard. This would allow you unlimited travel within zone 1 & 2 on the Tube, Buses, DLR and National Rail. You can buy one from any tube station or tube ticket machine. (This is a paper ticket).
Paper single tickets can be purchased at almost every bus stop around the capital. All buses are a £2 flat fare, whether you only want to go 500 meters or to the otherside of London.
Each bus stop has a machine that you press in the destination, put in the money and the machine will print your bus ticket. You must do this before boarding the bus as you cannot buy a ticket onboard. Failure to buy before you travel will result in an on the spot fine.
Oyster cards are alot cheaper, both used as a Travelcard or as a single journey ticket. Use it as a Travelcard in Z1&2 and you will only pay £5.30 instead of £5.80. Use it as a single journey ticket, and you only pay a flat fee of £1 for any journey. Oyster cards can be picked up in any Tube station for a returnable deposit of £3. Remember, you must touch in and touch out for every journey, or you will be fined. |

if you're coming to visit, you wouldn't be wise to pay individual bus or tube fares, you'd be far better off buying a travelcard (for one day, three days, a week) then you can get on as many buses and tubes as you want ... details on this website

most tourist places are within zones 1+2 |

It is £2 flat fare per bus journey whether you are going 1 stop or 50. So if you had to use 2 buses to reach your destination it would be £4.
If you have an Oyster Pay as You Go card it is a flat fare of £1 per bus journey. The Pay as You Go automatically caps itself to the price of a 1 day travelcard so you will never pay more than that.
You also don't need to worry about which "zone" you are travelling into on the tube with an Oyster as it works it out itself and charges you accordingly.
You can set your Oyster card to "auto top up" by entering a valid credit or debit card online so you never run out of credit. You can use the Oyster on all buses, tubes and trams. You can't use it on most National Rail services. If you are likely to be travelling somewhere that requires using National Rail services as part of your journey you might be cheaper buying a 1 day travelcard which is valid on these journeys within the zones purchased. |

The cheapest 'cash' bus-fare here in London is £2 (two pounds). You will save a massive amount by getting yourself an Oyster Card and loading up with some cash and use the card to pay as you go on the buses. Using an Oyster Card will cost you £1 per bus trip/ride - that's a 50% saving right away.
You can save even more money if you are a student. Check the link below.

Believe it's one pound if you've got an Oyster card which is the way to go. You can't get tickets on the bus in Central London so just fill your Oyster in advance. Details here:
