+ You might like Rosslyn Chapel about 15 min outside of Edinburgh. I has plenty of history and intrigue and mystery. It is rumored to have caverns that hold treasures (Ark of the Covenant, Holy Grail, and the treasures for Solomons Temple from the Crusades.
Edinburgh Castle should be another worthy stop.
Some of these Charge for a tour. I am not sure if they charge if you don't go on a tour. A long time ago (60's) I went and I think we just walked in and tagged along with someone Else's tour. See the links below. Some pictures included.
Good Luck |

If you are travelling by train just as you exit the Edinburgh station turn back and have a look at the castle on the mountain top. This is the inexpensive place I can recommend |

Edinburgh Zoo is pretty cool - especially if you are there at 3 o clock when they let the penguins out of their enclosure for the Penguin Parade.
Its worth paying for the hop on/hop off tour bus as it gives you a good overview of the city and is pretty reasonable. |

Arthurs seat - its free to walk up.
However there are two roots - one is a gentle walk up the hill the other is a root that goes up a bit and then become a jogging track around the hill.
Lots of people get mixed up and then walk around the jogging track get confused and then try and scale an incredibly steep slope.
So unless you are into extremem climbing don't do the silly route. |

For sightseeing the tour bus is a good day to see everything, and you only need to pay the price for the bus (it was about £8 last time I noticed the price). The good think is that you can get on and off to go visit places you like the look of.
The royal mile is a lovely walk often with lots of street theatre to see. The museum of childhood on the mile is free to go into. As are the museum on Chambers street (go up the Royal mile, take a left at the council buildings along george 4th bridge and chambers street is on you left, you'll see the museum). The Scots Monument on Princess street gardens isn't too expensive to climb(though it's often closed so don't assume it'll be open) adn there are FANTASTIC views of Edinburgh from the top.
The obvious things like the castle and the whiskey heritadge tour are ok price wise but only if you go to a few of them. There are plenty other things to see and do in Edinburgh in a few days.
And if you take the bus, Roslyn is quite a way out of Edinburgh so it will be a whole day to visit, but the bus fare is only £1 each way on the Lothian red buses. |

I loved the Castle (but I'm into that sort of thing), also Arthur's seat is another good one, along with the Botanical Gardens. St. Giles Cathedral, which is on the Royal Mile, about midway between Holyrood and the Castle is fascinating, and if you happen to catch any sort of choral performance, the acoustics are exquisite. Just wandering around on the Royal Mile is pretty cool. Don't waste your money touring Holyrood, but the old abbey next to the palace is cool, and is another freebie. Everything I've mentioned, except the Castle, is free. |

Loads of Museums along the Royal Mile which are free - start off at Holyrood House and work your way up along the Royal Mile towards the Castle, the Royal Museum nearby is also free and definitely worth visiting. Climb up the Scott Memorial at the Waverly Bridge end of Princes Street for fantastic views of the city and out to the Forth Bridges. |

If High Street Hostel is still around, they used to provide free walking tours of the Royal Mile when you stayed there, ending at the castle. Used to be a Great sandwich shop right around the corner too (been a few years so not sure it is still there). The hostel would have some recommendations on pubs with good live music. And there is always the Eerie Pub Crawl if you like a good Guiness :-) |

Most of the museums are free in Edinburgh.
Some of the shops are interesting to visit, the ones on the Royal Mile between the Castle and Holyrood House are good for tourists.
The Castle is very expensive to visit - if you want to see the same view go to the Camera Obscura nearby it's cheaper.
The Scottish Parliament Building is very interesting.
It is quite easy to spend a whole day touring Edinburgh and not pay any entrance fees, you may have to walk a few miles though!
Have a good trip |
