In London how much should you tip for a £1.75 coffee?

Daniela (Poppy's Mama)
I'm a Londoner and if I was buying a coffee to take away, I wouldn't tip at all but if I was drinking it in the coffee shop, then I'd leave the 25p

This isn't America, why would you tip for a coffee it's dear enough already, this is a recession were in, no point in wasting your money.

MISTER BIG IS AWESOME

Lol, who tips for coffee

becc
I think of tipping as more of an American thing. It seems that most of the time people only tip in the nicer restaurants. So I would say tip nothing

no idea
Rating
come on mate in uk nobody tips for anything thats the truth where you from america?

AmyGiggle
Tipping is not so common over here compared to in america

GARY
NOTHING, why tip,you are only subsidising the employer who is only paying minimum wage with the excuse " you can make it up on tips", you will not get any better service !

theblondekutay
Don't tip for coffee. Tip at restaurants for prompt service. Don't tip anyone who doesn't come up to par.

Recession anyone?

Still Waters
Nothing

And I mean that quite seriously

Over here many employers use the minimum wage law to mean tips come off wages...

... there is no point whatsoever giving a tip, as it wont make any difference to the person who gets it, youre just subsidising poor paying employers.... not the employees....

if you wish to tip, no more than 10%, and make sure from the staff that they actually get it in addition to their wages, or whether the employer snaffles it!

Tip? TIP?!
In the UK we dont tip. Its not part of our culture.
So really, nothing is the best answer.

Its not customary to tip in the UK, unless you're in a restaurant - and even there the tip is usually included in the bill.

If the coffee is had in a nice coffee house, where you would get a bill placed on your table, I would leave the £2 on the table.

It is not customary to tip over the counter/desk in the UK.

you don't tip if you are buying coffee.

You tip if you are sitting down to a meal and the waitress brings a bill. You then tip around 10%. However most posh restaurants now include 10% service so watch out for that so you don't tip twice.

Also, don't every tip electronically with your card as it will not go to the waiter/ess, always leave a couple of coins on the table rather than doing it on the machine.

You also tip cab drivers and hairdressers but not everyone you buy something from in a shop like a coffee or a sandwich etc.

carina
I'm shocked so many people would even contemplate tipping for a simple cup of coffee ... the darned stuff is so ridiculously expensive to start with there's no way I would give a tip ... I don't even give a tip for a sit-down meal unless it's been very good (and I mean VERY good) service

tipping is optional ... staff should be paid a living wage to start with and you should feel under no obligation to tip unless you actually feel like doing so

shantellefarrant
Tips don't really apply anywhere except half-decent restaurants in London.

Nothing, personally I don't feel any obligation to tip anyone but choose to for good or exceptional service. I do not tip for coffee or taxi journeys.

Most people go for the 10% rule... I always do... HOWEVER, why do you want to leave a tip for just one cup of coffee?? And £1.75... You've been ripped off.

I never tip for coffee, only for a sit down meal - in a circumstance where the person serving me was lovely, I would tip though.

Jon
I usually give them back the coin change left over.

It depends where you are drinking this expensive brew. If it's being served and the service is already included like it is very frequently, you should still add a few more pence, otherwise give your usual 15 % tip. If it's not served, no tip.

Cheeky Cherub
just give them a £2 coin and say keep the change
