i go to a school in cardiff ( the capital of wales) we speak english, but welsh is a compulsory subject through school, apart from a level though. Although in the north many speak welsh as a first language

londonstu
All schools speak both but in the South and East it's mainly English with a bit of Welsh and vice-versa in the North and West.

Peter R
I believe that English is most widely spoken, but learning basic Welsh may now be compulsory

Very much depends upon where you live - some schools are all Welsh whilst others are bi-lingual.

Well in Carmarthenshire, Gwynedd,Ceredigion,, Isle of Anglesea, Northern Pembroke, Western Clwyd and northen Powys. South western Powys and western and northen Swansea and Neath and portalbot are where children attend schools whose first language is generally welsh.

Welsh my first language i went to welsh category A school in Carmarthenshire we didn't learn English until we were 7.

Same throughout, And there are many other schools in Wales where welsh is the main language!

English is also spoken but to a less extent here in west and north western wales. Where as it's more Engllish in the South Eastern Valleys

Stuart95 - Has no idea of the situation what so ever and doesn't understand the concept of First language to fluency

there's a difference Mae yna gwahaniaeth

depends on location all speak english as first language, some use welsh during other lessons such as maths for example, where i live its just outside chester so is basically england. i was born in england and grew up there so did not know any welsh. in my school we did welsh lessons like one hour a week. there are welsh schools which do both. for gcse welsh set, but its only like worth a C if you dont do the full course which will be a option, i did short course which is full but only one hour a week.

yeah ppl saing that welsh is first language in north couldnt be more wrong maybe really inland but generally english

added: crymru bach, i live in north wales and no one speaks welsh ever! i could speak a bit while i was in school as well as french but cant really speak either now. I never use them because welsh is not spoken here. even ppl from very welsh families that go to welsh school do not speak welsh as there first language

Both. Some schools, both primary and secondary, are designated "Welsh-medium" which means that most subjects are taught in Welsh. Other schools teach in English, many are bilingual, but it is compulsory in all schools to study the Welsh language until at least age 14.
