like in the U.S. we call 911 for emergency, but what do the people in U.K. call for emergency?

we have a choice of TWO numbers in an emergency. the first is the original and old one 999.
the second is one shared with the rest or majority of the EU and that is to dial 112

however it is a criminal offence to dial the numbers when there is not a genuine emergency. and every call can be traced within a matter of seconds before you even get to speak to an operator. you can still be found if you attempt to withhold your phone number. this is a safety feauture allegedly (or so i heard) incase someone needs help but is unable to speak the line is traced and police are dispatched first and then they can cal in one of the other services should they be needed. (or at least that was what i heard many years ago).

why do you need to know this?
are you planning hoax calls?
are you planning a trip to the UK, and you are preparing for the worst?

i hope that helps!

i always remember because i used to think that it would suck to dial on a rotary phone if it was a real emergency. it would be like 9...............9.............oh forget it, the heart attack has passed

and as the person before said they can trace your number and will do so. My mum knocked her phone once and it dialled 99 and the police turned up!! They advised her that calls can be traced just from dialling 99 and that she should move the phone away from the bed where she had had it!

999 is the normal for emergency , but you can ring the police station direct without going throw the operator , when you ring 999 the operator asks which emergency do you wont (IE) police, fire or ambulance ,saves a bit of time if you ring direct.
