Lancashire and Yorkshire are generally "the North" - further north than that it gets called the Northeast or Northwest - or Scotland, but let's not go there :o)
Curiously there's also the West and East Midlands, but further east still and it's just the East (Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambs). Essex is thrown in the pot with Kent, what used to be Middlesex, Surrey and London and called the Southeast. Sussex and Hampshire are South. The West starts at Wiltshire and sigues into being called the Southwest around Somerset.
The ITV regions are a fairly good rough guide as it happens, since these terms are most often used by the TV weathermen. |
