I cannot believe how many people have this wrong.
Don't they teach you anything at school these days?
Midday is the middle of the day.
Midnight is the middle of the night.
How can something that is in the middle be on either side?
12.00 is called either midday or midnight.
Neither of them is either AM OR PM.
we have AM followed by MIDDAY [1200] followed by PM followed by MIDNIGHT [1200] or better still 2400.
We do NOT say midnight pm we say.
12 midnight or 12 midday. Do not add either PM or AM to either.
There you've all upset me now. |

12 o'clock midday is NEITHER am or pm - HOW CAN IT BE ????????
The 'm' in am and pm does NOT stand for morning - it stands for 'Meridian'
AM is 'Ante Meridian' = before the middle (of day)
PM is 'Post Meridian' = After the middle (of day)
12 midday IS the middle so therefore cannot be before or after = neither am or pm, and should always be reffered to as 12 midday or 1200 hours.
11,59.59 is am - - 12.00.01 is pm,

Traditionally, people write 12:00 PM to mean noon, or midday. But this is not technically correct. There is no 12:00 AM or 12:00 PM. PM stands for "post meridiam", where meridiam is the exact moment of noon. Noon cannot be after itself, so it would not make sense to write 12:00 PM. But most people do it that way, and it's probably a good thing because it avoids confusion. |

Well now this is actually a very good question! The convention is that 12.00 midday is PM, however there is always arguement and confusion over this. 12.00 midday is not actually after midday. 12.00 and 1 second is. The same is true of midnight. It is for this reason, and to rule out any confusion, that the military use the 24 hour clock.

Hi, 12 noon is classed as afternoon as it is pm which is post meridian meaning loosely, after morning. Hope that helps. |
