Is 90K£ as a salary is enough to live in London ?

Hello,

I've a job offer for 90K£ in London. Is it enough for two adults and a kid to live there ? I would like my kid to go to a public school.
Additional Details
Of course, I'm not british, I'm french. All the people around me tells me that London is over-priced for everything... I know of course that people are living with less than that. But I would like to know if I can buy an appartment with this salary, pay a school for my kid and have a normal life with vacation from time to time...

A few figures for you:

£90k salary will give you a net salary of £59k [1].

Average house price for somewhere in the commuter belt (Sussex for example - and I agree with the others who have said you should live outside of London) is £206k for a semi-detached and £343k for a detached house [2].

I guess that by 'Public' school you mean private or independent - average school fees are about £17k a year (basic fees) [3] - add another couple of grand onto that for uniform, trips, sports etc.

Outgoings for rent/mortgage, food, utilities, insurances, transport (commuting), private healthcare etc. between £2k and £3k per month (this is a wild stab in the dark and depends a lot on what your circumstances are).

I hope this helps.

Have to agree with Suzie...

If you live just outside of London, you'll be able to buy a bigger property with a garden and you won't have the pollution of living in London. You would be able to commute to work in well under an hour.

You would be able to have a very comfortable lifestyle on that salary and still be close enough to London to easily go in for both work and nightlife, such as theatres, etc.

I live about 30 miles outside of London, and whilst I don't normally work in London, I do travel "up to town" quite frequently for both work and leisure and feel I have the best of both worlds.

Plenty of people live in London on a good deal less than that.

However, if you plan to live in Mayfair and send your boy to Harrow - no it's not nearly enough.

yes it's more than enough to do all that you want including the school.

Yes It is more than enough to live any where in Uk with that income. It all depends on what type life style you want As an average person living in London the income is more than enough

yes, don't be ignorant.

Yes, you should be fine.
But living about 30 mins commute away will save you so much on housing prices so you could have a great lifestyle.

No, deny the offer unless they agree they up your pay. A London begger would turn his nose up at £90,000, he'd take such an offer as a peronal insult. As for buying a home in London on £90,000 a year, fat chance of that. £90,000 wouldn't even buy you a brick.

If you do decide to come, good luck on such a small wage, however, you might have to resort to eating out of soup kitchens, and even then, you must remember a bowl of soup costs £100 each - it's heavily subsidised.

Suzie
That would be mega bucks to live in London although I can never work out why anyone would want to! London is a horrible city!
Live out in Surrey or Essex or Hertfordshire and commute in - much nicer and better for kids

Average salary in England is 22k so your well enough able to live where ever you want. Send him to Harrow. And don't live near north london too much violence their.
