Do you know what the exchange rate is betwen the pound an the dollar is right now ? I bet not. So how do you expect the clerk in McDonalds, the ticket seller on the tube or the barman in a pub to know?

Either change your dollars at the airport when you arrive or use your ATM.

There are countless places (banks, bureaux de change) in London to change money, and some major shops, such as Marks & Spencer, Harrods etc will accept foreign money -- but they do it as a service and the exchange rate is in their favour. You will get a less advantageous rate than if you use a credit card or change cash at the airport.

fatsausage
Change your money into Pounds Sterling - do not make life more complicated than it is already. How would you feel if you were behind a Cash Register in some Canadian country store and someone wanted to pay in Pounds Sterling.
Get with it.

emmiboo
Usually foreign money is only accepted in britain in the airports. outside the airport you will find it difficult to spend your dollars. It is very easy to find places to change your money into pounds sterling though.

i dont think so but you will be able to swap it at the banks easily !

no problem.

In some places they will accept dollars but you are then relying on whatever exchange rate they fancy dreaming up. If I were you I would change my money up before hand and keep to that system. There are far too many crooks in London to start dealing with them.

Good Luck

lol is the pound accepted in new york? thats international and stronger then the dollar. do us a favour and just get it chnaged because if you spend it your only get pounds back and most shops would wnat to do the converstion rate.

Fat Bob
Do you suffer from bankophobia?

Xorgon
dollars are NOT generally accepted in London, but you could change easily.

DORA
No! Why do Americans think they own the world? Don't bother coming to England. We don't want you here.

No, you won't. I don't know what you mean by "American currency is international". In some Asian countries, they now use the Euro instead of the Dollar.
Anyway, change your money before you get there. If you prefer to do it upon arrival, do it at the airport or, if you can wait, at the Post Office (this is usually the cheapest place to do it). Try to change a lot of money once instead of a little several times: they usually get a commission for EACH transaction.

I dont know...the Pound is much stronger than the dollar these days, so your dollar won't get you much

you could exchange the money then use it in central London

popeleo5th
You'll find a very small number of shops and market stalls in central London will accept Dollars, but most of the chains will not. If they take it they'll give you a terrible exchange rate. You're better off changing a small amount into Sterling and using travellers cheques or a credit card.

HELLO THERE
don't bother exchanging money. if you have a bankcard that works in canada or the united states, just use that at the money machines there. i use mine (an american one) all the time. cover your hand while typing in the code though...for a while, at least in manchester, there was a bit of trouble with thieves stealing pin codes and card numbers. your pin code should work. check with your bank before you go. using your bank card will cost a lot less than money exchangers, and you will get the best rate through a bank machine.
