Is England a country? Is Scotland a country? ?

I am a Hong Kong guy who never been to the UK. However, I have an English friend , Paul, who is orginally from Oxford ( the city, but not that famous university ) .

Yesterday we hanged out in a pub. Suddenly a guy came over to our table and introduced himself. . He asked Paul " Where do you come from, buddy? " Paul said he is from England. Then the guy says " You know what? England is not a country! Are you from Britain or England ? " Then I saw Paul' face, He seems to be a bit pissed. Paul said to me " Excuse me for a while. I need to have a chat with this guy! "

Is England a country? Is Scotland a country? Is it normal for an English guy to get pissed in that situation?

thanks

Yes. England and Scotland are countries. As are Wales and Northern Ireland.

Together they are a sovereign state known as the United Kingdom. The UK can also be called a unitary state.

Brit's tend to get upset if you say their individual countries aren't countries. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish get particularly upset if they get called 'English' and are told that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are part of England. All four nationalities can be called 'British'.

Hope that helps =)

Scotland and England are both countries.
What someone has said about them being states is not true.
Great Britain is made up of England ,Scotland and Wales.
The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland ,Wales and Northern Ireland.
The British isles consist of England,Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

This may help explain it : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles_(terminology)#The_British_Isles

Rosie says RELAX.
Yes, England is a country.
Scotland is a country.

Both England and Scotland are counties. To be more precise they are two of the four constituent countries that form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The other two are Wales and Northern Ireland.

Some foreign people believe that England and the UK are equivalent since they have the same capital, London, and because England is the most prominent of the four constituent countries. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, the capital of Wales is Cardiff and the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

It is normal for English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish people to be upset if they hear that their country does not exist just because it belongs to a union (the UK).

Scotland and England are Kingdoms. Wales is a Principality. Northern Ireland is part of a Province.

It can be misleading to use the word "country" for any or all of these, as it is a unique situation in the world. But it is undoubtedly true that most of the inhabitants of each consider that they live in a "country".

In a political sense Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland and England are provinces which make up the UK, they have some independant power but all are subject to the central governent ultimately.

Most of the inhabitants seem to think they exist as separete countries but this is certianly not the case, it's similar to Catalonians in Spain, culturally and historically they can be considered to exist but they are recognised politically by the EU and the UN as part of The UK or Spain however much the people may protest.

So in short, The UK is the country, scotland and england are nations within it. The guy speaking to your freind was being intentionally provocative so it's no wonder your freind got angry, regardless of whether the other guy was correct to point out the mistake of claiming England to be ones home country.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are countries. Each of these countries falls under the same monarchy which puts them into the United Kingdom. King James of Scots inherited the English throne and created a "marriage" between England and Scotland, England and Wales had already been "married" as such and thus they became Great Britain add Northern Ireland and you have the United Kingdom.

Each of these countries have their own parliaments (Scotland) and Assemblies (Wales and Northern Ireland) apart from England which is governed by the UK Government.

Scotland for example has its own Government, First Minister, Laws, Education, Health care, Economy etc etc, it even has a foreign office in the USA.

So to answer your question, yes they are countries, people from scotland, england, wales & NI are proud of their individual countries and dont appreciate it when foreign people try to tell them something entirely wrong about their own countries.

Think of it like North America, an island which consists of Mexico, USA and Canada. The UK is an island which consists of Wales, Scotland and England.

England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland and Republic of Ireland, are all countries by themselves, together they make up the British Isles, without Republic of Ireland they are U.K, with just England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales they make Great Britain.

Jock
Both are countries, though we are joined in political union with Wales & Northern Irelqand to make the United Kingdom. No, the more pressing question is...wanna buy a DVD?

Technically England and Scotland aren't countries: they aren't recognised by the UN as countries and they do not have complete sovereignity.

UK - State or Country
England,Wales and Scotland = Nation

Both are two independent countries, but are geographically known together as Great Britain or the UK.

England and Scotland are both states, NOT countries. A country is a fully-independent state with its own legislative and executive body free from any external control - obviously, both England and Scotland doesn't fit the criteria.

They are states under the United Kingdom.

Britain refers simply to the island which contains Scotland, England, and Wales. United Kingdom is Britain and Northern Ireland combined.

Hope I helped.
