England is a country. The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Hi, it can be confusing, that's for sure!

There are two main islands: The large one on the right which is England, Scotland and Wales, and the smaller one on the left which is Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of four separate countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain is made up of three countries: England, Scotland and Wales (for political reasons).

It's all quite confusing, but it is England that is the country, not the UK. Hope that helps!

Geographically, England is a country. Politically, Great Britain is a country as is Northern Ireland. Geopolitically, the United Kingdom is a country.

England is a country, in the same way that Scotland and Wales are. Scotland and England are the United Kingdom, as it was the Act of Union in 1706 (I think it was 1706...) that unified the previously independent nations under one government.
Wales and Northern Ireland are not technically part of the Union, as Wales is a Principality and Northern Ireland is a province. Neither were incorporated in an Act of Union. Indeed, Northern Ireland did not exist until the British government decided to keep hold of six Irish counties when Ireland managed to take control of her own affairs from Britain (and we all know what problems THAT caused!.)
Great Britain, in the modern sense, is Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Although United Kingdom and Great Britain have become generally interchangable, only one refers to the complete area governed by the British Parliament, and that's Great Britain.
Hope this helps.... because reading it back looks about as clear as mud to me....

Edit - Ok, what's the thumbs down for? Check it for yourselves, if you can be bothered looking somewhere more accurate than the random opinion-fest that is Wikipedia.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are know as the "Home Countries." England, Scotland and Wales make up the island of Great Britain.

The full title of our land has a longer name than any other country - The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

So far everybody has forgotten all the British enclaves like Gibraltar, Falkland Islands, Channel Islands, Isle of Man .....

Yes England is a country - the little bit East of Wales and South of Scotland. Look in any UK passport to read "the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland" to see how NI comes into the picture but all the other enclaves are British and therefore part of GB and the UK. The UK is the entity which is one of 27 member states of Europe.

to be pedantic...........Wales isn't a country it's a principality of England

The answer is both.

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire are all individual countries.

Great Britain is the largest island in the British Isles, and comprises England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is also classed as a country (!), and is a constitutional monarchy comprising the three countries of Great Britain together with Northern Ireland.

Edit: Before more people give me thumbs down, check my source. Muppets.

England is a country, the United Kingdom is a state - a political entity formed by act of parliament.
