England is a country.
The United Kingdom is formed of 4 countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain is the name of a geographical island, which includes Wales, England and Scotland but NOT Northern Ireland (although a lot of people don't realize that!), as Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are in a different island called the Island of Ireland.
That is why the official name for the UK is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The islands of Great Britain plus the Island of Ireland form the British Isles. |
