Is English also spoken in Whales?

Hey yall, I'm from Kentucky. I'm gonna be visiting Whales in two weeks (after England). I was wondering if English is the first language of Whales or would I need to memorize a few phrases in the local language to communicate better. Unfortunately, I won't be visiting the beautiful state of Scotland, but I'm sure I'll have a great time in England and Whales.

Hi.

The reponses to your post have been hilarious. I'm Welsh and I can confirm that English is indeed the lingua franca of WALES. The native Celtic language is Welsh and, as many of my learned fellow-answerers have pointed out, it's spoken by some 25% of the population(myself included). You'll find that Welsh is mostly spoken in West and North-west Wales, although there has been a significant interest and growth in the Welsh language in the South Wales "Valleys" in recent years. Cardiff, the capital city, has few native Welsh speaker but lots of Welsh speakers migrate there for work.

You'll get by fine speaking English but if you want to impress a few welsh-speakers here are some useful phrases(written phonetically for ease of pronounciation):

Bow-ray dar (Good morning)
Shood my (Hi!)
Hoo-eel(Goodbye)
Noss dar (Good evening/good night)
Dee-olk (Thank you)
Yekkid dar (Good health - say it before you are about to drink beer/wine, etc)
Come-ree am bith (Wales Forever!)

I recommend visiting Snowdonia National Park(in North Wales), the coastlines of Wales(especially in Pembrokeshire, west Wales), Cardiff(of course), and some castles(Caerphilly and Carreg Cennen are nice examples)

I hope you enjoy your stay!

Wales Wales. Whales are those big things in the sea that make low groaning song noises.

English is fine, lol.

Unless you are swallowed by an orca, I wouldn't worry.

The country is known as WALES. It's is where Welsh is spoken. Most people will speak English as English has been taught it school for over a century.

OMG LOL BBQ
It's Wales. And yes, just about everyone there speaks English. It's the de facto main language. (Only about 1 in 5 people in Wales can speak Welsh, and far fewer are fluent. I have some friends in Aberystwyth and Brecon, and none of them are Welsh speakers.)

Whales dont speak, they communicate differently.

As you've already read in other answers, a whale is a big blubbery thing that swims around in the sea.

As far as I'm aware only one person has ever been in a whale, allegedly, and that was Jonah. However, I don't think he spoke English, only Hebrew.

The country Wales is a different kettle of fish (or whales). They all speak English but with a funny accent.

You will find it difficult to understand how such a small island such as British Isles can have so many different accents. Even we can't understand some of them, especially the accent in the north east round Newcastle way.

As someone has already explained, Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Island that make up the UK are not called states.

No you dont speak english into a whale, but they do speak English in Wales.

OMG its Wales
and we speak Welsh
and its hard!

and not forgetting we won the six nations!!!!
WALES WON THE GRANDSLAM!!!!

and to say good morning u say

Bor-ra-da,

yes...

Nearly everyone in WALES (not Whales - thats a mammal that lives in the sea.....) speaks English. Many people do, however, speak WELSH, as a first language - however you do not need to learn this - but if you're wondering why signs and things are in two languages, its because they're in both WELSH & ENGLISH.

Hope thats of use

'Er indoors!!
Sure they speak English. They actually only speak Welsh, when someone NOT welsh walks into the pub!!!!

Just so you don't embarrass yourself when you come to the UK. Scotland is a country and not a state.
