I am British and live in VA, I have no problem understanding the American people regardless of where they live, or accents. Some Americans find it difficult to understand me sometimes, but it's more about different words than actual accent, I used to live on the south coast of England and sometimes found it hard to understand some Scottish,Irish, and Welsh people.
Americans are easy to understand in general.
Many English words do not have the same meaning in America, but I do not have any problems with communication.
I hope this clarifies things for you.

i'd worry less about accents and more about your grammar. |

The English can understand the American as do Americans understand the English. What we do not understand is the idiomatic speech. Like they say whanking--which would be masturbating and shagging which would be their slang word for having sex, things like that. I think otherwise, we understand each other pretty well. |

I've actually watched British movies with the subtitles on because the accent was so thick I couldn't understand half of it. |

I should be doing something else

Well I'm from Northern Ireland and I understand all UK and American accents. Even if someone is using slang, you normally have a pretty good idea of what they mean based on the context of what they are saying! =] |

It throws you off for a second and then you understand. But we do have a lot of idioms that aren't shared across the atlantic, and can confuse each other with those. If you saw the third Austin Powers movie, they make fun of this by speaking English that Americans need subtitles to understand. |

What? Why wouldn't americans understand american's accents? There are many different accents in america, but I think we can all understand them. I'm sure it's the same in the UK. |

Unless the people are way in the deep south, or have some sort of very thick cockney English/welsh, or other accent, I don't think that's true at all.
The only difference is what people use for slang. Lift, elevators, chips, fries... etc. Which might cause some confusion, but it can be readily understood. |
