It's like any city in that you'll need to do your homework and find a good part of the city to stay. Somewhere in the city centre, Mossley Hill or Allerton would be good. I think its a great city. Nice city centre (the building work going on is for the 2008 City of Culture award - so it'll soon be done and should look really good). The nightlife is good and Liverpool has more art galleries and museums than any UK city outside London. Also, the people are friendly and a good laugh too. Go for it!

I have worked in many places in the world, and many places in England.
I think Liverpool is the friendliest place in England, best sense of humour in England and best folk in England.
I even had an apartment in a place called Toxteth, which I heard a few days later was a 'no go' area for the police and all about the riots etc. It didn't bother me, I saw no hassle, it was a 10 minute walk into town, I never had any bother.
My contract was about a year, I enjoyed every minute.
It cannot be compared with London, I have also worked all over London, what a dump and the folk must be the most miserable crowd in the world.
Good luck on your move.

Dunno about the city but I work in a call centre in Bristol and the Liverpudlians are the politest ever - even if its the wrong number!

I love Liverpool. Yes it has it's rougher areas, but so does every big city. The best thing about Liverpool is the people. Whenever I've been there the people have been lovely and friendly. There are a lot of stereotypes of scousers, and I'm sure you'll hear a few of them here, but take no notice. Most of the people who slag scousers off have never actually set foot in Liverpool.

In and around the City of Liverpool there is a lot more to offer than you think! With stunning Coastline and breathtaking Countryside you might be surprised.
The maritime City of Liverpool has a long and chequered history. The city contains much of architectural and cultural interest, including the Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Walker and Tate Art Galleries. Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs are internationally renowned. Good housing, costing somewhat less than the national average is available in pleasant suburbs. There are excellent schools in both the state and private sectors. Liverpool is well served by motorways and Inter-City rail services. It has a rapidly expanding airport and Manchester International Airport is also within easy reach.
Liverpool's restaurants and bar scene has blossomed over recent years and new venues are opening all the time. Whatever your taste and budget, the choice is huge.

Whether it's the beautiful buildings or a taste of the outdoors that catches your interest, you won't be short of ideas.

Liverpool is a nice city though it has its not so nice areas within the city.

It was voted to be the European City of Culture for 2008 and they have a special website set up to advertise itself.

http://www.liverpool08.com/

even if you find yourself in a not so nice area travel is easy within the UK with Megabus, National Express and a good train service around the area.

I would recommend you visit before you decide to move there though as you might have a different opinion on the city to everyone else.

hope this helps

Liverpool is BELLISIMO!!!!! there is so much to do and see,the people are very welcoming, hey we are Capital of Culture for 08.Check out the Liverpool 08 website it has lots of useful information on it.

Liverpool is a very tolerant City but if you want to find trouble you will.

There is a lot of bad publicity not always undeserved but most of it seems to come from people who do not know the City i.e. they think they do but live on the Wirral or are reporters who should no better who go looking for the unpleasant parts and people I would make the point that it is better than many cities and only worse then a few

Liver. Pool. Sounds positively charming.

i was there during the war in and out but great city and comical people and if you don't get a laugh from a scouser then you got no sense of humour

hayley m
liverpool is okay to visit for a day but if you want to live there i would warn you some parts of liverpool are full of druggies and people who go round knifing people so i would advise you to live slighlty outside of liverpool instead

i have lived in liverpool btw and still live near it

francesp
At the moment there is to much building work going on in the city centre, it's a nightmare. keep away from it.
It's a place like any other, most people are friendley though and will go out of there way to help a newcomer,Unless of course you are taking there jobs or houses.
There are druggies everywhere, they are the scum and curse of these times. Vancouver is Beautiful city and we saw them there.
If you have a sense of humer and are tolerant then wellcome

Some parts... gets a bit dirty and grubby around anfield... the albert dock is nice - would love a flat their :)
I think the reason it gets a mixed image is through stereotypes. Deep down, the majority of people their are funny, friendly, and love a laugh, but its just a small minorirty of young scallies that give it a bad image. Their are wealthy and poorer parts, but all in all if you've never been, it would open your eyes, and even though I live just across the water (20 mins away) its still great to go sight seeing and shopping, and as I previously mentioned, the Albert Dock is my favourite place because its clean, stays to its roots, and has a lovely atmosphere - especially on a windy cool day in autumn!
As for the Liverpool / Everton fans, you'll find Everton fans are the most 'genuine' because unlike being a liverpool supporter, its not an image thing, its a very family associated, working-class club that sticks to it roots.
And finally, regards to the stereotypes you may be familiar with on 'Harry Enfield & chums' thats all it is - a stereotype! yes, tracksuits are part of the culture, but i don't think anyone from merseyside is too bothered, its just the thing we've adopted. Liverpool is infact a great city for style - if you want the latest fashions, just look around at all the girls!

It one of the ugliest cities in the UK. Someone mention the Beatles came from it. Yes they did but none of them live in it that for sure.
