Is London over-priced?

Transport, rent, theatre and cinema tickets, tickets to exhibitions in museums - the list is long - all seem to cost vastly more in London than they do in other large Western European cities.

I think that if you weigh up the benefits of living in London against living in any other city in the world, you will realise that the extra cost incurred is just a small price to pay for life in the most amazing city in the world.

It is if you are from up North

Definately London is expensive, but people who work here get paid more than in other parts of the country.

Also, some folk forget that there are loads of free entertainment in the city. You dont have to get drunk and spend a fortune to have a good time.

Princess
I've read that when house prices are factored in, London becomes the 2nd most expensive city in the world. I think it's awful that the average young person in full-time employment can't afford to live anywhere but a rented room in shared accomodation, which forces you to be financially dependent on other people.

I love London, but I would love it even more if I were rich enough to have my own flat and go out in the West End without necking a bottle of cheap wine first so I don't have to buy any when I'm out!!

Oh and the price of the undergound? Don't even get me started.

supply and demand...people want to be in London , they want to spend money there and there is plenty coming to London because it is seen as stable and safe...

Iain the ORN!
Even more in Hertfordshire! £3 for a pint!!!!!

sandy
The average wage for a professional working in London is 5 grand more than outside the M25, so it all works out in the end.

I would choose it over any other UK city any day.

mortisia2121
It's awfully overpriced.

somehting is worth what people are paying for it. If people are paying london prices for london things, then it is priced at what it is worth. If people weren't prepared to pay £3 a pint, london would stop charging £3 a pint. That, however is never going to happen.

Snowy
The pound sterling is very highly valued at the moment don't forget so its expensive for tourists anyway, however London prices are stupid.

It beats the life out of me how any Londoners can get drunk on the price of beer down there, which in some very ordinary back street pubs is double other parts of the UK.

Always has been!

churie78
Over-priced, over-populated, over-hyped.

Sarah
Yes its terrible for some things. I have never been to St Pauls Cathedral and tried going there on Saturday to find that it cost £9 to get in! I was so appalled I didn't bother.

However, restaurants and hotels are better now due to websites like lastminute.com - we stayed somewhere 4* for only £79 for the room and there was even a hotel room on there for £50

asbo_arry
One word...tourists.
But talking about the price of food, etc. Go south of the Thames - id est; Brixton, Streatham and most points toward Croydon, and it's almost like being in any provincial city - even saw a Netto store in SE London and a couple of Lidl's elsewhere - which brings me back to the word 'tourist' - the people who tend to squeal most about the high prices (unless they're Californian) are tourists...mostly from the same country - England - and outside the noose (known to one and all as the M25). Why should a city which claims to be one of the best in the world for tourists not go a-skankin'? But there are two sides of London...and unfortunately for most tourists, ten yards from Oxford Street/Leicester Sq. or the Eye, and they'll suffer withdrawal symptoms despite complaining about the price of their hits.

Most definately. Its also smelly and very impersonal. I always feel on edge when I go to London.

London is over-priced, especially when you're used to prices elsewhere in the UK. But, its becuase so many people are willing to pay those prices. If people are willing to pay over the odds, than of course businesses etc are going to charge them.

The whole UK is overpriced, why do you think sites like e-bay are so popular, and people buy tat from £-shops, just to stay still each month with bills takes up 3/4's of most peoples income

Lisa
Not really....you get what you pay for! When you live here, you get used to it. And it's always a bonus when you go elsewhere and find it's cheaper!

Mary Pervo Girl
Not any more than New York City in the States is. Big cities like that are just prone to higher rates on various things.
