Scotland is a separate nation that is part of the United Kingdom.

Other nations of the United Kingdom are England, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

neo1072
it really is both, because the UK is made of Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and Scotland is north of England

It is a country that belongs to Great Britain but has its own local government.

Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Alba) is a nation in northwest Europe and one of the four constituent countries[2] of the United Kingdom. It occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain and shares a land border to the south with England. It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. Apart from the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands.[3]

It is both a country, and the north part of Great Britain, also the north part of the United Kingdom.
Great Britain is the island consisting of England, Scotland, and Wales.
The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland.

The Union flag, often mistakenly called the Union Jack, is designed by the combination of the English St George's cross, Scottish St Andrew's cross, and St Patrick's cross, There is apparently nothing in it from Wales.

Scots are taught at school that the English are their natural enemy but walk down any Scottish high street and they have a Curry's, ASDA, B&Q or WH Smiths just like any English town.

scotland is a dreary cold place, similar to its people. They have one thing in common, they hate the English. Do we really want them as part of the United Kingdom. I know which way I would vote.

waspy772004
Scotland and England are two separate countries with separate laws that happen to ruled by the same monarch (the first being James VI / I). They are both part of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, British Isles.
This is different from Wales which was invaded by Edward and became a principality (ruled by a Prince).

Scotland is classed as a country in the British isles. It is connected by land but does have its own parliament again after many years of english rule. Think of this way, the nation of Great Britain (or the UK) is made up of Scotland England Northern Island and Wales, plus other islands.
