Is Yorkshire North or South of England?

I was told that Yorkshire was almost classed as 'in London' if I looked on a map by someone. Now when I'm in my car driving to London it would take me about 5 hours so that tells me that I cant be that near.
Additional Details
Im sorry if ive affended anyone with this question, I am born and bred in Yorkshire between Hull and York (not America). I answered a question the other day asking 'whats the best South or North?'. I answered North is the best because I of course live in Yorkshire. I then had a comment made about me saying that I needed to look at a map as Yorkshire is near to London. Hense the reason ive put up a question asking where Yorkshire is. Again I've not meant to seem affencive sorry!

Yorkshire is nowhere near London. It is as you say a 4 or 5 hour journey by car.

(and then it takes me 2 hours stuck on the M25 to get round London!!)

Spirit*Girl
Hi,
Yorkshire is definatly in the north,
i live not far from London and it is not any where near London.
So who ever told you, is telling you porkie pies (lies).

It all depends where you start from...Yorkshire is in the North of England and beyond the pale for lots of 'southerners'. In fact Leeds is 200 miles from London and 200 miles from Edinburgh, so strictly speaking it could be classified as the middle of England! Travelling time is interesting, I live in the East Midlands and it takes me 2 1/2 hours to drive to either Yorks. or London. At a recent meeting in London I got there faster than someone who lived in London and had had to drive across the capital to get there.

It may depend on where you live, but I grew up in the Lake District and always considered Yorkshire to be part of northern England.
I remember when attending a 'Sixth form conference' sponsored by UNESCO - CEWC (Council for Education in World Citizenship), having two very puzzling conversations with other delegates.
The first went something like this: "Where do you come from?"
"The Lake District."
"Oh, then you'll know the boys from Aberdeen."
The second was when I asked someone, "Where do you come from?"
"You won't have heard of it."
"My geography's not bad, try me."
"Grimsby."
"Who hasn't heard of Grimsby?"
"Everyone else I've spoken to today."
I think Grimsby is in Lincolnshire, which for me is verging on the Midlands, but it's only across the River Humber from Hull, which is in Yorkshire and definitely North.

If you're from Yorkshire as you say in your additional details, then you should know that Yorkshire is most definitely in the North. Or maybe you're just trying to prove to the person who said Yorkshire is is most definitely in the north and far away from London. Maybe the one who said that was a typical Amercan, not you as chip2001 said!

k
Yorkshire is in North England

Mike Sanders

Your informant is an inbecile.... South Yorkshire is at a minimum 180 miles for London and the county extendes up to the top of the Yorkshire Dales/ North York Moors, which is a good 320 miles from London.

Yorkshire is neither north nor south of England !!
Yorkshire is Englands largest county !
The County Seat is York !!
Now whats its name London is of course to the south of Yorkshire by some 200 miles !
The only place in the world where one can buy decent fish and chips is in Yorkshire ( Durham arn`t too foul ) .Also the best beer is in Yorkshire !!
I do not want to appear biased so I won`t go on .

Now you've gone and upset LeedsMikey!
Easiest way to upset a Northerner - tell him he lives in the south!!
You sound like a typical parochial American who thinks that England is such a small place that everyone knows everyone else.
But of course, your question is a con, looking at the last answer you gave where you describe yourselves as being form Yorkshire.....
