ELRIC as a scot who often has to travel over the border,i find it both amazing and offensive that some shop's refuse to accept scottish bank note's,especially as the Bank of England was actually founded by a scot !!!,in my experience's the further south you go the more ignorant the shop staff are,i've even ahd some shopkeeper try to tell me that a scottish note is worth 10% less in England !! cheeky blighter's,have no fear it is legal tender and the added bonus is it's also much better looking then any English note of the same denomination,SPEND IT WITH PRIDE,"SCOTTISH PRIDE"your a lucky man to own such a note ! lol.

mrsglyndwr
You should have taken advantage of the eyelash flutter elric........coz it is legal tender in most retail outlets and is deffo legal in banks!

You lost out there mate, ah well, there is always your cat!

The quick answer is that Scottish notes are legal tender in the U.K. But,the further south you go,the more likely you are to come across shop assistants who have no idea.
Example: In Northumberland right down past Newcastle, shops, pubs etc see these notes on a daily basis and think no more about it. When you get down to south Lincolnshire and below, they are more of a rarity.

Rolsy
It is legal tender in England, yes...

fizzywo
Scottish fivers are proper ones.

rayjoh17
Yes, we go on holiday to Cornwall and they take Scottish notes no problem. Only one shop refused, unfortunately it was a small supermarket, and we had stacked a trolley as we had just arrived, they said NO to our money so we said NO to their goods and left the shop leaving them to unload the trolley and put everything back on the shelves.

tamwtam
typical English if it says sterling on it it is legal tender anywere in Britain there are other nations in Britain not just England and any fake notes that i have seen are all English bank notes not Scottish and its the English that refuse our money thick or dumb i think it is just plane ignorant.

if it has sterling on it yeah you can spend it anywhere in the UK. the northern Ireland ones are the best they have clear plastic in the middle...so cool

bubblebum
Now for the CORRECT answer...

Technically Scottish bank notes can be accepted in England (although they are not classed legal tender), but if they are, they MUST NOT be handed out in change, as that would be illegal.

The shops etc. that accept them must hand them into their bank as with other notes and the bank will credit the account as normal.

Don't know. Check with the bank.

Alli.G
Its legal but some shops wont accept cos their dumb!

Most of the preceding answers display pretty fundamental misunderstandings of what "legal tender" actually is. All legal tender is, is a form of money which cannot be refused in settlement of a pre-existing debt. In most cases, when you go shopping and take something to the cashier there is not yet any debt - there is an "invitation to treat" and the shopkeeper can refuse to sell you something even when you've picked it out and taken it to the till; if you and the person at the till agree any form of payment e.g. euros, dollars, or credit or debit cards would be acceptable forms of payment even though none of them are "legal tender". Sticking "Sterling" on a banknote does not make it legal tender (and it's not on English notes anyway), it just says what kind of Pound it is, so you don't confuse them with, say, Egyptian Pounds.

Technically Scottish banknotes are not legal tender, not even in Scotland - they are "promissory notes". Similarly Northern Irish banknotes are not legal tender, even in Northern Ireland. Come to that, Bank of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales - the Bank of England £1 note was the only note which was legal tender throughout the UK, but since none have been printed since 1984 that's a rather useless bit of information. The only form of currency which strictly speaking is legal tender in any amount throughout the UK are £1 and £2 coins.

Nevertheless, "legal tender" is irrelevant because it does not affect what people can accept as money - they can accept what they like as money, the only problem is that the further away from Scotland you travel, the less likely people are to recognise what a Scottish banknote looks like and thus be sure that they're not a forgery, so they're less likely to accept them.

I would have no hesitation accepting a Scottish note in my change - I'd be a bit dubious of Northern Irish ones, though, because I think I've only ever seen one once.

vambo the fourth
Yes, it is.

Fortnum
Absolutely. Out of interest, 'legal tender' has a very specific meaning, related to what denominations and values can be paid to a debtor or court in order to settle a debt. Though lots of English people are suspicious of Scottish notes, they are perfectly acceptable as payment.

Afi
I think it would be OK.

Crusha03
Yes it is !!
I recently came back from Scotland with a Wallet full of Scottish money and have used it with problem!

Yes it is legal tender. I used to work in a super market, we were allowed to accept Scottish notes, but we were not meant to give them back out.

I think it is Elric....and beware of girls fluttering their eyelashes at you....lol
