Belfast is a safe place to live probably far more safe than most other major town and cities in britain, there re about 90% less immigrants and foreigners in belfast and from being from london originally i know that it is unsafe mainly becasue of them. i think you would be more safe in belfast that in one of the places in essex say dagenham or barking, the street crimes in belfast are probably the lowest in britain, no house robberies etc and as for bombs etc are you living in the 70's,??? there is some minor fighing every now and again and i mean every now and again between teenagers etc anything moe than that there would be a cause for, but is that not better than the gangs and no go areas for white people in london

Belfast is totally safe to live in. The past is the past....you'll find (like anywhere) there are a small number of people who hold onto predjudice but on the whole I don't think people worry too much about 'the troubles'. I think the greater population likes having peace and like not living in fear.

Belfast as a city has really turned itself around. It has a bustling economy and nightlife, a relatively low crime rate and is a great place to live.

I should be doing something else
Yes Belfast is as safe as any city in this part of the world despite what a lot of people from outside Northern Ireland may think, I have lived just outside Belfast all my life, going there on a near daily basis, and have never had any problems.

I hope it's safer than Glasgow

I live there and have done for all my life. What has happened in the past is in the past and Belfast has become a new, modern city that is still progressing. I understand it is not a completely safe city but what city/town is? I find it a very good city to live in. visit my website

Just like any other city now. Strange but during the troubles we had a very low crime rate. Like any other city now. Including all the drunks out at the wekkends wrecking the place Re:Budding Author. Northern Ireland belongs to the Northern Irish, not the Republic of Ireland or England.

Yes its safe now. The IRA who caused all the problems have been defeated militarily ( laid down their arms-same thing)and will never return. So dont worry.( However do avoid the heavy republican areas as some of them still limp around there.
Budding Author and Gerard show that some people still live in the past as I mentioned.

yes its okay. i heard its improved. i rmb when i used to live there, around july/aug it wasnt v safe to go into the city centre cos there would be lots of parading and even bomb scares. west belfast isnt a safe place. i recommend if u want to buy a house, buy it in the stranmillis area or in east belfast: like dundonald, newtownabbey, stormont area. good luck

budding author
Your reply from 'alan m' has not gone very far in improving matters!!
Those that say the IRA have been beaten militarily have also not helped a lot.
Without going into a load of history, the IRA have lain down their weapons, they are not beaten by any means,
The aim was (and still is) the unification of Ireland, that Little corner in the North belongs to the Irish people, not the English.
So lets try this 'democratic' bit.
As to your question, I feel that at the present time Belfast is safe, if the folk keep hearing responses similar to the ones you have here, it wont be for long.
I am not Irish, I am a Scot, but I really hope the peace will remain intact.
Oh ,one more point, if peace has been restored it would be interesting to know why troops from the UK are still in the North?
