England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are their own separate countries.

None of them are states.

If you put together England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales together it makes Great Britain.

If you put together England, Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland, Scotland and Wales it forms the United Kingdom

Hope That This Helps You!

Good Luck!

England, Wales and Scotland (some also say Cornwall) are countries which make up the nation of Great Britain...we do not have states here...except the sorry one we find ourselves in just lately due to the incompetence of our government.

The countries of Great Britain and the country of Northern Ireland make up the union that is known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland...UK for short.

England is a country. Our equivalentof states would be counties e.g. North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, Manchester, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire etc. etc.
Your school needs to get some new atlases.

Col
The term " state " is the confusing marker . In he USA the have a federation of States unified under as Federal Government . The United Kingdom does not have a federal system and comprises 4 countries - Scotland , England , Wales and Northern Ireland . There is a United Kingdom Parliament based at Westminster which used to govern all 4 countries . There have beeen a lot of changes in the last to decades with Scotland , Northern Ireland and Wales having devolved parliaments ( or assemblies ) which control devolved matters and expenditure such as transport , education and health . Incredibly England is the only one without a parliament of its own and Scots , Welsh and Irish MPs in the Westminster can vote on purely English issues . !!!

They are 'countries' that make up the 'nation' of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Even official forms (Government/Social Security/Driving Licensing etc) when asking for country of birth refer to England, Scotland, Wales & NI.
