Is glasgow a very violent place for Canadians?

Im a Canadian considering going on exchange to the university of strathclyde in glasgow for a term, however i've heard that Scotland can be a very violent place, I'm wondering if this is true or if its just blown out of prooportion?

Of course it's all blown out of proportion. I have lived in Glasgow all my life and think it's a fantastic place to be. You get good and bad everywhere, as you would do in any large city in the UK. I hope you take this opportunity to come and see for yourself how welcome you will be made to feel. I'm sure you will have a great time and love Glasgow as much as I do!

Compared to many other places on this planet, it is quite tame. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings and stay out of questionable neighborhoods.

Same advice you would want to heed within your home community.

Glasgow used to have a really bad reputation for violence but it has changed a lot (for the better!). Glaswegians are the friendliest people you will meet. Especially if you're in a pub! It's a party city & if you're a student there are plenty of good student bars in town to have a laugh in. I lived there for 20 years+ and go back frequently & never had any trouble.
Go for it Dave!

Load of tosh and blown out of all proportion. If you ask Glaswegians most will tell you that they've lived all their lives there and never came into contact with violence of any sort. As already stated theres good and bad areas in all cities ~ yours included. Come on over and enjoy your time here.

Glasgow is a very friendly place unless you are English and have a superior attitude. There is soo much rubbish written about it. You will get on fine and have a fantastic cultural experience.

glasgow is a safe place, but like any other city it has it rough parts (bet your city does?)
when you arrive you will be given a guide of place's to go and no doubt become friend's with some locals.
Don't let a opportunity like this pass you by and don't let some idiot's on here put you off with there small minded thoughts.

Glasgow can be violent, but to be honest its not just to one race or anything
Ive lived in Glasgow all my life (17 years) and ive never been assaulted or beat up
So i don't think its violent
Just don't mix with the wrong crowd (drug dealers, neds ect.)
You'll be fine, theres more lovely nice people in Glasgow that you will meet and im sure have a great, fun time with.

I would recommen styaing away from Possil Park (aka Posso) as that is a pretty violoent part, with alot of neds and dangerous people
But yet again, ive still never had any trouble

No. Glasgow is very multicultural. The stories you hear about it are probably a lot worse than it actually is. The Scottish people are incredibly friendly wherever you go and they will usually go out of their way to make you feel at home. Most students have a great time there. :-)

Like anywhere else there are nicer areas, and less safe areas. I'm sure the University or Student Union would advise on safer areas. It's definitely better to avoid the Gorbals area.

I`m a glasweigen born and bred and i love Glasgow!

Dont get me wrong its not perfect but then where is? It has its rough areas and its nice areas like everywhere else, all in all i`d say us Glasweigens are very friendly.

xx

Stifle
It's not a very violent place for Canadians, just a very violent place in general.

I think that it has maybe been exaggerated quite a bit.

Basically, wherever you are going, a city or simply a small town, there is going to be some form of violence. Glasgow is Scotland's biggest city, so there is more likely to be a bit more violence than in, say, Tain, because it is a bigger city.

But is it extremely violent? Of course not! It is simply a city, and no where near as bad as a lot of places, New York for example. There are places where you cannot go out for the almost certain chance you'll be killed because of the gangs.

Let's put it this way, I'm from Scotland, and I have never come across any violence, though I tend to avoid places where folk I don't get along with go. The most violence I've come across growing up is a boy arguing with another over football, and none of them were at all hurt.

There is a chance that you could be hurt going ANYWHERE, but Scotland just itself is not an extremely violent place. If you want to go, go! There will be violence wherever you go, but Scotland is certainly not the most violent place in the world.

Oh aye, we MURDERRRRR 10 Canadians every night. LOL.
Seriously, a very few years ago Scotland was named as the best small country in the WORLD, (I think that was by "Rough Guides to..."
Sure we have some bad areas, but we also have some fantastic housing areas, and Glasgow City Centre really IS breathtaking, (especially when seen along the River Clyde at night)

Glasgow safe? LOL well it is to a degree.

Just stick to the city area, posh parts. stay away from Drumchaple, Easterhouse, shettleston, possil, Keppochhill, Drumry, Parkhead,Hutchesontown, Bridgeton and the rest.
