Hitching is never a good option whatever country you are in! In general it may be safe but all it takes is for you to be picked up by one psycho! Get the megabus, it's much more sensible than hitching and can be as cheap as £1.50!
Go to www.megabus.com/uk

hitching is never safe in my opinion, for the reason that you can't trust people you don't know.

Hitching lifts is never completely safe as you know. You could be picked up by a psychopath. I would get the bus or train. I hope you have a safe journey

lix
It's probably as unsafe as anywhere else.

mikeodonagh
Depends on if you are male or female, sure some trucker will give you a lift for a favour or two!

the cost of a coach ticket is £7 is your life worth that little??

Well not unless you wanna be picked up by psychopath or a kidnapping wierdo.
Take a wise option and take public transportation

Pretty much no body picks up hitchhikers here, for fear that you're a psychopath.

You'll get there in hours not days if you go by public transport or rent a car.

where are you from? in the uk, people dont really stop. we're not like that. unless you look like a good **** i really dont think they'll stop. sorry to be so blunt. Also, if you are using a word like 'intend' i reckon you could afford the megabus man!

no - you will get bummed.

its safe enough if you dont do anyhing stupid and arent too pretty. Its tricky though, as most traffic uses motorways and obviously you cant thumb on those. Get to a service station and ask a trucker fir a lift. might cost you a fried egg sandwich but its cheaper than the train!!!!

i went from Glasgow to Southampton......was ok.....but...i would..NOT..reccomend it....

Hitching is not safe in the UK, especially if you are a girl. I would never do this. If you're a guy, you might be ok. But its always a risk.

You know, you can get a coach from Birmingham to London REALLY cheaply, from like £5:
http://www.megabus.co.uk
http://www.nationalexpress.com

If you've got a bit more money, the train (including tubes!) is only about £40!
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk

That's my advice.... take it if you will!

On the whole its not too bad in hitching terms. I'm guessing you've done it before.... so usual don't take the ride if those inner alarm bells go off advice still applies.
Drivers don't tend to stop very often these days here so worth asking about at the service stations & having a natter with people passing though. Once people see you are 'normal' theres a much greater chance of a lift and you get the chance to check them out as well. Drink drivers are not such a hazard howadays, but would still avoid late nights if you can, and beware modified boy racer cars. Hey with that journey it'll only take you a few hours if you put on your best smile on. Happy thumbing. p.s don't forget your cardboard & marker-pen... happy thumbing.
