Is it dangerous to walk about in London, wearing a Manchester United jacket?

I've recently moved to London. On a trip to Manchester, I took a stadium tour of Old Trafford and bought a ManU jacket from the official store in the stadium grounds. I don't follow football and I'm not even a ManU fan - I just liked the jacket :-)
My friends told me it was a bad idea to wear the jacket in London, and that I could get into trouble. Today, when I was entering the local Tesco's wearing my jacket, a guy on the street told me not to go in, as 'everyone in the store's an Arsenal fan'. Now, will someone please tell me what the whole deal is about? Thanks in advance!

My advice is you wear you ManU colours with pride here in London. So what if people don't like it. Tooooo bad.

By the way, if you're planning to go to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics, you'll be okay wearing your ManU colours there. Why? China has more ManU fans than any other place on Earth.

It's probably more dangerous to walk about in Manchester wearing a Man Utd jacket!

That's rubbish, people all over the world support ManU, and London is no different. You'll be fine, don't worry about it.

That's where ALL their fans live

Ha! Are you American by any chance? Firstly, most of Man Utd's fan base probably live in and around London (lol)! Apparently no self respecting Mancunian would support anyone other than City. Secondly, the bloke outside Tesco's was more likely than not pulling your leg (joking with you). Use your head and if you're that bothered avoid wearing your jacket in London when one of the big clubs are at home to Man Utd.

If you walk around anywhere in a football jacket, especially one of the main teams, you're likely in for an earbashing, but it's got to be safer than walking round Glasgow in an England shirt.

you should be fine, not many man u fans are from manchester anyway. there all fair weather fans and glory hunters, the same as liverpool!

most man u fans are from london.

You will get away with it unless venturing to any stadium on a match day (although I suggest you avoid wearing it to pubs near Highbury or Stamford Bridge). More likely to get ridicule than violence (its a running joke that Man U has no Manchester based fans and you'll be propagating this).

Not really, just keep away from Norh London. Spurs and Arsenal up there, they may not like it.

I think the wearing of football colours is a very tribal thing for some people. A lot of bars even have a sign on the door saying no workwear / no football colours because it encourages violence. I would not wear it to be honest because you don't want to be asking for trouble, especially if it's something you're not that into. Maybe you can get something for it on ebay.

Old Metz
This is the deal (the truth & nothing but the truth)

Football in the UK is practically life and death to alot of the fans and supporters. I am not sure if you are from the UK or not but basically if you want to draw attention to yourself wear football colours when you are out. You will without a doubt have a comment thrown at you no matter what football club strip you are wearing !

It all depends on how you take it... If you provocate someone saying something to you about your jacket you will get a smack seems a bit unfair I know but thats just the way it is !

So you can wear jacket but just be prepared to have comments thrown at you constantly !

You may find that it's best not to wear it in some localised parts of the city but in general you will be fine, seriously. The local estates will be supporting their own teams so round that way you may be in trouble. In the city centre you will be fine as they're the third team there anyway! London is a mjaor capital city so you always frind many teams shirts on the streets.

Someone was pulling your leg, the good folk of North London have better things to be doing with their time then wondering why you would voluntarily commit the fashion faux pas of wearing a Man U jacket in broad daylight - you don't wear it during daylight hours do you? : )

no mater ware you wear it some prat will kick of just don't give them co-rs
