Are you referring to the people, place or weather??

I don't think so. I find the people of the North are much more friendly, well mannered and warm.. Places I have been have much character and a sense of integrity... Having to deal with people from all over the UK, I would prefer to deal with Northerners any day, sorry but Southerners are unpleasant and ill mannered... As for the weather, I would rather have rain and nice people as apposed to sun and misery....

well up north they can spell UP

As a Yank, I'm clearly no expert but I have spent a bit of time in the UK, both London area and the northwest and southern Scotland. My opinion:

The weather is marginally better in the south but nothing to write home about anywhere that I've visited in the UK. But the weather is not a reason NOT to visit the UK.

Some, but only some, of the scenery is a bit "grim" both around London and also in the midlands but it's the same thing on this side of the pond, too. I guess it can't be beautiful everywhere. On a positive note, the UK seems to lack the "suburban sprawl" that's rapidly ruining the American countryside and Brit planning is vastly superior to what passes for planning in the USA.

Maybe I've just been lucky but almost all the people I've met in the UK have been friendly and helpful to a traveling stranger. I must admit that the people of the northwest were even friendlier than those in London and its environs.

So, from a visitor's perspective, a charming, generally beautiful place with so-so weather populated by kind, generous and friendly people.

You want grim? Visit northeastern New Jersey, USA. Or most of New York City. (BTW, York city should sue NYC for defamation.)

no its not grim up ere in the north , its a degree or two cooler but the peole are sssoooooooooooooooo much warmer than southerners, who would probably grumble about most things ---sorry you southerners but its true

There are more and more people that retire from down south that end up living in the north for a better quality of life. Down south you are welcome to the asylum seekers and alike. Do you feel safe walking round your home town after dark? If your in the City arent you due a terrorist attack? In anwer to your question, NO, its not grim up North.

i'm from australia and went to the UK recently.

In London, i found the people were unfriendly and unhelpful. the further north you go, the more happy and helpful and 'real' the locals seem to become. i ended up in newcastle. that's the england i expected - full of lively people. not boring snobs.

I immigrated to Australia in 1968, and went back to England for the first time two years ago. At one time the North-East (I'm from Sunderland) may have been called grim. Not anymore. The pit-heaps have gone, there are more parks and open space, and the people are friendly to locals and strangers alike. I'm going back next year for another holiday.

NO IT IS NOT! I live up North, Cumbria to be precise and it is the most beautiful part of the country, we do get sunshine up here, the weather as been quite warm recently, theres nothing better than sitting outside of a pub in the evening looking out over the beach (you see we have the fells and lakes on one side and the sea on the other), we are friendly up here and definitely know how to have a good time

The North is not grim in the slightest. The weather is infact better than most of the Midlands. It is not overcrowded with immigrants. Everything is cheaper. We have the same minimum wage. All kinds of EU and government money is invested in the North. Northerners are friendlier than Southerners and many Southerners actually bare this out.

It depends where you are!! The people in the North are way friendlier than those in the South - I know coz I have to travel the tube everyday and I've come from the North!!

It rains more, snows earlier, the days are shorter - but thats just the weather and natural occurences, life in meeting new people may be so much fun and seeing new places. So no, not grim, just swings and roundabouts.

It kinda gets grim about Yorkshire, but by the time you get up to Newcastle theyve got over any grimness and are just getting on with it and enjoying themselves.
I suppose it depends on what you consider 'grim'.
I find it hard to think a place is grim if the people are so friendly and happy, even if it is raining........

sosgez
Hull is grim.

I live oop north and it's brill. The beer is better, the people are friendlier and the air is cleaner (except for Middlesbrough). Whenever i go to London or a similar big city it's ok for short visits but i can't wait to get home, everyone in these places is in such a hurry all the time and you need eyes in the back of your head wondering if it's your turn to get your wallet lifted or a knife in your back. Nowhere is perfect. But it's closer to it up this end!!
