IN most northern countries it is OK but go south and your tummy troubles start |

Most of the residents in their own country drink their tap water. The point is, the country you are in now has different minerals than all the others and that could cause upset stomach for you when you drink water somwere else, since you are not used to it.
If you only go for a week or two, buy bottled water but if you intend to stay longer, take the risk of few days upset stomach until you get used to it. |

Mains water is safe to drink in all of the European Union.
Those writing about Spain are just xenophobes.
There are cases of mains water being poisonous in the UK but this has resulted from accidents at the water works.
( e.g. Milngavie , near Glasgow for 2 or 3 days umpteen years ago). |

I've drunk tap water all over the place in Europe, including southern Europe, and it hasn't done me any harm yet. |

It all depends on where you are planing to stay and in what type of accommodation.
In Spain water not for drinking usually says so (no potable).
If you are in a hotel you should be fine, but if you stay in a villa that has its own well then I would advise you to drink bottled water |

European tap water isn't going to kill you, but tap water in southern Europe tends to have a higher mineral content, so drinking lots of it could give you an upset stomach. However, if faced with the options of drinking from a Spanish drinking fountain or dehydrating, the former is definately the healthier. Personally I prefer the taste of bottled water anyway. |

I live in Italy, and I can assure you that here tap water is good...
maybe only in sea-towns you can experience a little salty water, but if you drink it you don't get sick anyway! |

Drink some and find out, if your stomach feels like the John Hurt in Alien, then I wouldn't advise you drink anymore. ;-) |

No, not at all. And their bottled water is not to be trusted either.
You should bring bottled water from the states- that you can trust. 3 litres a day should be okay, so if you are coming for a fortnight you will need 42 litres, |

No, all the water from taps in Europe is deadly and poisonous. God knows why we even have it tapped into our houses!!! |

Thats too broad a question to answer.
You need to say not only the country, but also the town you're enquiring about.
The water's great here in Croatia, particularly Rijeka. Some of the best water you'll get! |

Only some areas - For instance, I know it is not ok to drink the water in the Canary Islands as you could get all sorts of nasty stomach illnesses. |

Mostly OK. Best bet is to go into a local supermarket.
If they sell bottled water in 5 litre containers and have a whole row of them,(and its cheap) then chances are you shouldnt drink the tap water. |

London tap water? Water quality varies greatly from country to country and even in county to county. Although the british like to think they have clean water they are top of the league in the EU for river pollution...the best countries for clean water are Germany, Denmark, Ireland and Norway.
But to be sure you should always boil your water. |

Depends where you are. You can't drink all the tap water in the UK (seen as that's the category you put the question in). I was in the south of England and we had to drink bottled water. Although it may have just been a temporary thing. If you're not sure just buy bottled water, it's not that expensive. |

I use the rule that, the further west I am, the safer the water is.
Although, I would drink bottled in Spain - but brushing your teeth would be fine. |

Of course it is, its much safer to drink British tap water though, the water on the continent may be safe, but being British, I don't fully trust the continentals. |

I'm inclined to agree with the others. UK and N. Europe tap is safe while everywhere is a another story(stick w/bottled). |
