Is it unfair that Manchester is often described as a dump?

Very unfair - it is an insult to dumps.

Dumps perform essential functions to civilised life (unlike Manchester)

Bren
i think so my daughter was there last week on a course and she said it was much nicer than she thought it would be

noname
is it? I do believe that's the first time its ever been called that. You are from Liverpool methinks

jason c
Yes its very unfair, yes there are some really run down parts of Manchester but I would love to know what city does not have.
Ja.

Not really - I`ve been to Manchester LOL.
Seriously though it`s like most towns and cities ,it has nice bits and crappy bits.

Not fair in the last 15 years.

It might have been in the 80s and early 90s, however since the IRA bombing in 1996, Manchester's renaissance has been one of the major success stories.

Today, politicians are desperate to be associated with the city in some way, and other cities attempt to ape what Manchester has done in the hope that it will work for them.

There is also a recognition amongst national politicians that Manchester can make plans work. That's why it was intended to be used as the destination [read guinea pig] for the "single" [in the first wave] super-casino (if Blackpool and London had kept their traps shut they would have got a one (or in the case of Blackpool the whole string they wanted along the sea-front.) a couple of years down the line once the government had demonstrated to the sceptics that it worked in Manchester.

Similarly see how Manchester carried of the Commonwealth Games in 2002, and compare that to the London Olympics that are three years away and already turning into a farce of the size only London can conjure up to add to the long and growing list of examples such as the Dome, Heathrow T5,....

It isn't often described as a dump, most often it is described as a vibrant area of redevelopment.

Yep, but we all know that the people that describe it as a dump are just jealous :)

I think it's unfair 'Matthew' that you have so many monikers registered by yourself (Cockney D, Harold Shipman and Tony Wilson come to mind).

I wonder why you feel the need to open your mouth so much...unless it's only to change feet?

The only reason you need all these fake profiles is to back up your own obsessional delusions about Manchester, which in my experience I've never heard described as a 'dump.'

Harry R
Hello, 'Matthew Parris' - it sure is unfair, but methinks the city's importance over the past 20 years tends to get Londoncentric press all sneery and petty.

Every big City has its deprived areas and places which are more run down than others, Manchester is no different from any other major City/town. I live in a very clean, well maintained suburb but just down the road in a neighbouring area it's a complete sh!thole.. that doesn't mean the whole place is like that though.

Having had the misfortune to live there, I am trying to think of a good area. No matter which way you approach Manchester you go through a rough part.

If you come in from the north, you have the delights of Cheetham Hill. Very handy if you are a prostitute or a drug dealer, you could make a few bob passing through.

From the south, you go through the third world slums, commonly known as Levenshulme and Lonsight. You'd swear you'd slipped into another dimension and come out in the poorer parts of Africa.

From the west, that means you will becoming from Liverpool ( that's the best thing that I am going to write in this sentence) places like Cadishead, Irlam and Salford are along this pot holed road that will knacker your suspension and leave you with spinal injuries.

Come in from the east and along the Oldham road, you will be greeted by old shops propped up on their own because they were in terrace, but the others fell down/bombed in last war/or council left to rot. It looks like a broken smile.

The trouble is the council never spends any money out of the city centre. They ignore all the sub-standard housing that should be demolished. The tower blocks that they emptied years ago and left as monuments to municipal incompetence.

Awful,awful place. Best avoided.
