Is liverpool the unofficial capital of north wales?

Well the other answers obviously do not know their history.

I don't know who coined this phrase but it was common in the early part of the 20th century.

Why? As one previous answer pointed out, Liverpool had a large Welsh speaking population due to many Welsh people who came to live in the city, indeed it is widely claimed that much of the city was built by Welsh workers who settled in the city. The Beatle Ringo Starr was born in a group of streets in the Dingle known as the Welsh streets.

Liverpool was also the place where many North Walians came to shop, Thursday was known as Welsh day due to the special trains that would carry thousands from North Wales. Owen Owen, T J Hughes, and Lewis's where all department stores started in Liverpool by Welshmen which made a lot of money from this trade.

Finally the National Eisteddfod took place in Liverpool in 1884, 1900, and 1929 to recognise the importance Liverpool had to North Wales. Liverpool 08 tried to get the Eisteddfod to take place in Liverpool this year, but the organisers are very proud of their Welsh heritage and will not countenance it moving out of Wales again.

Because North Wales is remote from Cardiff and had no large city, unofficially Liverpool was regarded as the capital of North Wales

no , liverpool isn't in wales

LuciJayne
no it isn't and never will be. Liverpool is in england not Wales so that makes it very impossible to happen. Wrexham in north wales is the sort of capital of north wales although the capital of wales is cardiff.

No, Liverpool is in Western England. Not Wales.

Wendy
No Liverpool is in England (North West) and North Wales is in Wales but they are quite near to each other. I suppose I can see the point of your question as a lot of people from Liverpool used to holiday there in the 70s and 80s as it was within driving distance and easy train and coach travel there and back

NO

There is NO capital of North Wales, official or unofficial.

Even if there was, it would certainly NOT be in a foreign country as is Liverpool.

Liverpool is in England, not Wales.

If anything was going to be the unofficial capital of Wales in England, it would be Chester.

I'm a Welsh nationalist so i oppose this but it's true, or said to be

Reason being :

It's the main city that people commute to from North Wales.

Also it is noted that Liverpool has a large welsh speaking population, Back in the 1950s, 60s you would hear Welsh more in Liverpool than you do in Cardiff, Obviously this has changed now Cardiff boasting 32 000 welsh speakers and everything coming to cardiff, Even north Walians venture to Cardiff these day's it's not true but has been in the past.
