Of course you've heard 'lots of bad story about that place'! Suspect you're jumping on the Hillsborough thing. I'm from Manchester, and think Liverpool is fine and warm to people from outside the city. You have thugs and morons - just like we do in Manchester (and elsewhere in the UK). How about telling your friend to spend a week or so in the city before he/she makes a decision, rather than listen to dears with chips on shoulders (or people who have never left their town). Always thought London was without a great deal of personality - then my sister moved down there and told me something somewhat different.

I am from Manchester and hear a lot of stereotypical stuff about Liverpool - please don't believe it all. Every city has it's bad areas - I live in an area called Middleton and people wonder how I am alive it has so many stories - it isn't even bad. I've never had a problem.

The liverpudlians have probably heard a lot of bad stuff about other cities but it's all just words.

Lived there for two years , like every where else in the world ,there is good and bad , the good being very good , the bad ,well just avoid the knobs that give the city a bad name , personally I liked it

No. Ppl who say that have never been there before and believe any old rubbish they hear and see on tv, made by ppl who have never been there, eg Boris Johnson.

How is it if the media wants to portray someone who is common and working class they pick someone with a scouse accent, although people like Kerry Katona and Danielle lloyd does not do any favours either. Don't get me started on Brookside either!!

Corneilius
One has to wonder why Dave lives here if he is so depressed about the place, I mean its not like there is a chain attached to his ankle is there? He has lived in Blandchester and has the temerity to have a go at Liverpool

Been round the world museum too many times? Don't you have any friends.

As for the question, I apologise for regulars who have probably read this many times before but lets look at facts

reported crime per 100,000 population in the England and Wales using the government’s latest crime statistics.

Camden (London) 155.94
Cardiff 147.04
Greenwich (London) 137.30
Islington (London) 163.39
Hull 151.01
Leicester 148.79
Lincoln 140.72
Manchester 179.25
Middlesbrough 169.76
North East Lincs 150.72
Norwich 137.62
Oxford 134.46
Peterborough 138.36
Slough 144.65
Southampton 154.37
Southwark (London) 148.81
Tower Hamlets (Lon) 145.03
Westminster (Lon) 275.58

Liverpool’s comes in at 132.56 Lower than Lincoln, Manchester, Cardiff , Norwich, and the dreaming spires of Oxford.

So your friend statistically would be safer in Liverpool than Lincoln, Norwich or even Oxford never mind other big cities like Manchester.

Edit
Pretty convincing proof that despite his claim to live in Liverpool, Dave is in fact a bitter Manc.

Edit
I too live in Liverpool Dave and just because I prefere to stay does not mean I don't look elsewhere. I was at BBC TV centre in London a couple of weeks ago, and had to walk around Westminster with the signs warning pickpockets that the police were looking out for them. You know Westminster which in my statistics has by far the worse crime in the UK. And you know what else, they have unreported crime there just like every city in the UK has, its not just Liverpool as you so offensivly suggest. If you want to look at car crime go back and live in Blanchester which by every indicator shows it to be the car crime capital of the UK, and were a 16 year old joy rider was killed last night.
You know what I hope you get your education and meet your aspirations, suck what you want out of our city and get out, you sound just like the kind of user that we can do without. You know what else? You will not be missed.
I was in the Peak District last weekend, I will be in Edinburgh this weekend, but I will return to Liverpool not because I have no aspirations, I am simply someone who does not want to climb the greasy pole and sell my soul for personal vanity.

I live here because I choose too, not because I know nothing else, and one of the best reasons for living in Liverpool is that I rearly have to deal with sad sacks like you.

Steve
You probably heard the 'bad stories' from people who have never even been here. Liverpool is a fine city, as are most of the people who live here.

It wasn't voted 'European Capital of Culture 2008' for nothing you know! There are very many much worse places to live. Tell your friend to come with an open mind and let him/her decide for him/herself.

Ignore the disgraceful comments made by:
a) Dave (nobody's forcing you to live here so why not slither back under the rock in whatever town/city/sewer you crawled out of.
b) Munky - unable to form own opinion so resorts to repeating the utter tripe and lies printed in the Sun 20 years ago.
c) Miss Lisa - another eejit who can't form an opinion by herself so resorts to regurgitating steroetypical hype.

Funnily enough ' dave' writes EXACTLY like another poster who has been peddling this shite for a while now.

The reason why? Because Scousers will always jump to the defence of Liverpool whether they still live there or not because it's that kind of place. I guess some people get off on the reactions they cause.

I can't better what Neil and many other posters have said - I will only add from my own point of view that I am passionate about my city. I am well travelled within the UK and not one single solitary place can compete with my hometown. NOT ONE.

The pull I feel is immense and I doubt that will ever change..I don't give a crap what anyone else says - it is, and we are unique. So 'Dave' just do one you sad ****.

I just found this on the web from a man visiting from jo'burg -

The City Of Liverpool…. I’m absolutely in love with that city. Everything about it, it’s so rich in culture in history in art and architecture. The people are some of the friendliest people I have ever met, takes a while to understand what they’re saying, but you don’t care.
It’s like you know when you’re at home you feel like you can do anything you want but if you have to go to some fancy posh mansion the first thing you’re thinking ā€œoh crap, don’t break anything ok’ :D You don’t feel comfortable and you don’t feel at home. Liverpool was exactly the opposite, and maybe that’s why it didn’t feel like I was in another country, maybe it just felt like this is where I’m supposed to be.

Says it all for me.

don,t believe everything you hear or read in the gutter press come up with you friend help them to move in lol and have a good look around this famous old city it,s just not the Beatles and the football clubs it,s the people the buildings (more georgian buildings in Liverpool than London and Bath combined) go on the tour bus from the Albert dock or visit the oldest China town in Europe go for a trip on the ferry across the Mersey and really see what alot of outsiders say about Liverpool but don,t come up with your eyes shut and ears closed if you want a guided tour around the region email me I,d be only to glad to show the welcome that outsiders get from us Scousers Big Mac

It`s on the same level as Dundee. I could`nt believe the similarities between the two.
Except Liverpool has the Cavern (well a new Cavern) and the Beatles Museum, Magical Mystery tour bus, etc. And some pretty good clubs.
Well liked by many who live in them, but certainly not by all. Don`t worry about it, there`s always a way out if it is`nt to your friends taste, but they might love it!

footballlad90
I wouldnt say it was. It's always struck me as a bit of a depressing place. a few tradagdies have occured there however I went there once for a night out and it was excellent in my view.

In one answer you say you lived in London in another you say you have not which is it ?

You say you lived in Australia and are apparently going back. How did you end up in Liverpool if its a dead end city to further your carrier ?

No it is NOT the worst place. It is a big city and it has its share of rough areas and crime like every other big city in the world. I studied in Liverpool and had virtually no trouble there, and as a northerner I would also say it is a nicer city with better buildings than Leeds, Manchester, Bradford, Hull and Sheffield. Dave you sound like you have spend the last four years sitting in your bedroom and going to work and not doing anything else. Maybe if you had got to know some people in Liverpool and resarched the historic context of a city that suffered huge economic problems for 40 years due to factors beyond its control then you might not be so full of such BS. And don't expect London or which ever "land of opportunity" you are going to to next to be any better. If you move to London you will see it is aggressive and competitive and you have to compete extremely hard for the opportunities there - and they might not come your way.

Steven J
a lot of the bad things you heard were something that happened about 10 yrs ago. these days its alright dont get me wrong their are some really bad areas but some lovely nice areas.

mandyj67
Dave you're the kind of person who gives the English a bad name, that name being, whinging pommy! Apologies to all other English people, personally I think the lot are being judged for the few. There's an old saying that goes 'Put up or shutup.' Liverpool is obviously good enough for you to live there and further your career. The city is supporting you, keeping your career moving upwards, you said so yourself. If you don't like it get the hell out, but for pete's sake shut the hell up hey? Who do you think is going to waste precious minutes out of their lives, minutes which we'll never get back reading your whinging rant about the place that's supporting you? In answer to the question, I have family there, and like every single other city on earth, there are posh and rough suburbs. Seen one city, seen them all. Go looking for trouble and you'll find it. Anywhere.
EDIT- Dave-What, you're coming here? Great, just what we need another whiner.

yes without a doubt. I wouldnt even consider it. Thieving scousers will nick anything

Dave
Yes!

* I've have to walk under police tape to get down my road one too many times :o|
* If I have to put up with another scouser asking me for 20p for petrol even though there dressing in a £100 tracksuit I might kill someone
* Pj's are for bed, not walking to the chippy
* There is nothing to do but drink
* Yes the beatles were a band, get over them

I could go on and on and on :o( I hate the place :'o(

Edit: And really lets not get started on the scouse birds :o( Liverpool makes the baby Jesus cry! :o(

Edit2: Oh yeah for the people who like it, and think its ******* awesome... See how many have actually left and have somewhere worth while to compare it too (southport on a day trip or the wirral don't count).

I've lived in cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, London and Manchester. Being in liverpool at the min (4 Years!!! 4 YEARS!!!) is the most painful time of my life ever! The night life is good, until you realise that cava and hannahs (and the new one is ****) are the only decent places. There is nothing else to do, there is only so many times you can walk around the world museum (which is pretty poor as far as museums go) or the maritime museum.

There is no culture in liverpool. It was just a face to try and regenerate the city. You'll find its still a **** tip when the dust settles. :o)

Edit@ Steve: Please tell me steve, where exactly have you lived then to be able to hold liverpool in such an amazing light?

Liverpool was given the capital of culture because it is the second most poverty stricken places in the UK (Hull is first). Liverpool has a massive unemployment rate and needed desperate regeneration after the dockers lost there jobs in the 80's. Sadly it seamed no one was able to pick themselves up and do any good, instead they waited for the hand outs ;o)

Its ok steve, its natural to feel proud of where you come from, it seams Liverpool has an extreme (almost obsessive) sense of pride when it comes to their home city. You guys can keep it. I honestly will not be coming back to this toilet for a long time after I leave. (PS: I have everything in place. I’ll be leaving liverpool for a new job in Australia in about 5 months. Let’s hope I don’t get shot in that time period hey? ;o))

Edit@Corneilius: I'll ask you, being a proud scouser yourself, the same question I ask every other proud scouser... Have you ever left? Shockingly, about 98% of the time the answer is "No - Why would I want to liverpool is the best place in the world!". The ones who have left usally come to terms with how **** liverpool actually is... ;o)

I'm here because I have aspirations in life, I have a career that I want to build on, and sadly my best option to progress was to come to liverpool. As I said I'm leaving soon, and I cant wait (Maybe there was too many words for you to get this far down the post). But then words like "Aspiration, Career and Progress" are words very rarely used in liverpool, are they? Unless of course your talking about the grafton on a Monday night, maybe drug dealing or that amazing thing called Liverpool one... which bright spark decided to move all the shops from church street into liverpool one (which is obviously a poor mans Trafford center)

Corneilius you are just another delusional scouser. Maybe they put something in the water to make you believe your city is great. I’ve always wondered why liverpools water has a pink and black goo when left to dry? ;o) Never had that anywhere else.

You’re statistics are also just that (I’m guessing you never studied them at school :o) I’m not even going to start picking holes because I’ve already wasted enough time). How many crimes in liverpool go unreported? How many of them crimes are more major than others? I have never been a victim of crime, except for the 4 years I’ve lived in Liverpool. I’ve had my car broken into numerous times, had untold problems in town on weekends, I’ve had people try and mug me on the street and I’ve had neighbors who have had people climb through there windows (While they have been in the house) and taken keys and other belongings.

All my stories of liverpool are bad. Maybe you just accept these ideas of a way of life? As for your proof, I hate to break it to you, but I’m not a Manc, bitter yes, Manc no.

Edit2@Corneilius: Everyone travels my friend. Just because you visit for a day doesn’t mean you understand the place. I came to Liverpool feeling really exited, something new, which I absolutely love experiencing. Over the space of 4 years my respect for the city has dropped more and more to the point now where I leave vowing never to come back due to my awful experiences here. Even Manchester (which for the record is a bad city as well – don’t get me wrong I’m not completely just Anti-Liverpool) looks good in the face of Liverpool.

I have not taken anything from this city. If anything I have done it a favor. I’ve obviously been doing a job which was too skilled for a local person (I relocated to Liverpool remember) and I kept that job local, and spent my money locally and I think I’ve done this city a favor. I could have always moved to somewhere like Chester and commuted daily spending my money in Chester instead of locally. But instead chose to stay city center.

I love this way you assume I am from Manchester. Please tell me where I said I came from Manchester? ;o) I have not once mentioned where I was born. So please stop making stupid assumptions and read my messages properly. This is about the third time I’ve said I’m not from Manchester! Also I really liked your use of the word ā€œVanityā€, I hear the beauty and tanning business are booming in Liverpool? ;o)
