It is not forbidden to smoke in the UK. In Scotland and N.Ireland you are not permitted to smoke in a public place, ie...bars and restaurants. England follows suite in July. |

The "no smoking in public places ban" came into force in Scotland last year and it takes effect in England in July (I think) this year! |

In public places in Scotland, but not England
Dunno about Wales and NI (best check it out, esp. Northern Ireland cause they may have followed the smoking ban in the Irish Republic)
You can smoke outside or in private in any of the devolved regions of the UK |

Not yet. At present you can smoke anywhere that allows it, not on buses or tubes, but in restuarants, bars, etc.
July 1st is the day it gets a total ban here, then you will see millions standing outside bars, resturants, workplaces etc. |

At present in Scotland and N Ireland smoking is forbidden in public places which I will not detail as others have informed you. I believe later this year it will be banned in England and Wales. You are not even able to smoke in a van or carrier provided by an employer for your job. The Scotland/England border is merely an imaginery line on the road and a sign saying Welcome to Scotland or England which ever way you are heading. At present then you could be smoking in your company behicle and 1 cm later you could be in trouble. I HATE smoking but even I think it all a bit much and was for giving smokers a separate room for example in a pub. However, there are numerous reason why this was not allowed. I more object to the fact almost every smoker lights up in the street and it is unavoidable not to breath in the fumes. |

It has been illegal in public places (workplaces restraunts pubs etc.) for nearly a year in Scotland i believe the law comes into force in England later this year |

In Scotland it is banned in public buildings and work-places.
In England and Wales the ban will come in to force in July.
As a smoker I can't say it bothers me much! I don't smoke in public.
It isn't likely they will ever make it illegal. |
