as a British guy myself...the simple answer is NO, England not really all its cracked up to be, but that's my opinion. the crime rates on the up as are petrol prices though were not so tax crazy here.

the uks the best - rains a bit but people are friendly (especially up north) but its a great place.

From the US, it's bloody expensive. I've lived in both places, and I prefer the US.
The UK's stereotyped as being all cute and cottagey, but in reality, for moneytary expenses and sense of freedom, the US is probably better.

But, however, we have WAY better TV :)

Unless you have a profession or a skill, or lots of cash, we are full.

I'm a brit (not a particularly nationalistic one), who has lived in the US, Thailand and visited over 45 countries in total so i'm pretty qualified to answer this question as best as it can be answered (as u really don't state what it is in particular you're looking for in a residency):

Firstly let me correct a few misguided replies here. Britain doesn't have anywhere near as much racial tension that the US does. It also has FAR less crime which, statistically, is decreasing not increasing (just media focus is increasing, giving false impression).

Our freedom ideologies are different, e.g. we're encouraged to take gap years to travel, we're less pressured to follow a system, we're not as squeezed by a legal system that encourages ridiculous claims - they're all great for our freedom. But America's government have much less influence on daily lives such as taxes (ours are 17.5% plus the rest), building planning permission etc. So it's different.

Other bad things about the UK: weather is generally poor (though not as bad as most complain), it's ridiculous expensive, there is a "thug culture" among youths and a one-track-mind binge drinking culture in general (but you could get away from that if you wish).

The majority of the [crybaby, typical british] repliers so far fail to mention the incredible advantages of living here. 1- Our passport, is the best in the world and gives incredible freedome to move. 2- Europe is on our doorstep and doesn't require a visa, the hotpot of cultures right here. 3- our economy, i can't believe someone here claimed its poor, what a complete and utter retard, i'll let you compare it to your dollar and make your own mind up. 4- we have some of the greatest countryside living, quaint villages and cottages, community based living and most beautiful scenery in the world. Its here, whether previous posters have bothered to explore it or not. 5- All our media is great, TV etc. Less choice but better quality i reckon. 6- We start with an average of 23 days off work to take when we please as opposed to 10 in the US.

Brits take a lot of things for granted, free education, free healthcare, better working conditions etc and instead prefer to cry over the few imperfections we have. I really have just one thing to say to those people... take a fking trip to cambodia then let me hear you complain to me that your "god given right" craphole job in a supermarket went to a foreigner.

Rants aside, i hope i informed you more on Great Britain.

I escaped from London when I was 27 years of age, vowing never to return and this I have stuck to, other than going there for business reasons. I am now 65.

I have a HATE of ALL large towns & Cities ever since.

Stick to the countryside â€“ I live in Brecon, Wales and love it.

Wide Open Spaces, Fresh Air, No Exhaust Smoke etc. etc.

Get over it i'm pretty sure there are others who don't like this country now. But might as well stay things MIGHT get better besides things are bad over in the UK to.

To answer your ? yes the UK is a good place to move to. But remember your favorite movies and shows won't come out there when they do here.

Generally the UK is a good place to live. It has its problems, but it is still better than many places in the world. It would be worth visiting different places in the UK as it varies so much. London is a bit of a dump, but it is very receptive to foreigners and would be a good starting point for you as there is a lot to see and do, and plenty of jobs.

London is really expensive to live in. Glasgow is rough, liverpool mehh some bits are ok. I live in Northern Ireland, which is technically part of the UK and its great, (the safest place to be!) apart from the weather.

I heard in America you have to pay for healthcare and stuff.. well not here, its 'free' well.. you pay for it out of taxes i think.

I think it is a good country.

Which country in the UK? The UK is more than just England. And sorry to say, there is no perfect country. Better to try to fix what is wrong where you are rather than run away. I know a few friends who would trade with you to live in the US, too bad you can't strike a deal. But immigration doesn't work that way.

I have liked the parts of the UK that I have seen - but have never stayed for any real length of time. I was a tourist. Visiting and living someplace are very different things.

If you want to move country to experience another culture - fine, all for it in fact. But running away seeking a better or perfect country (no matter where you are running to or from) is destined to fail. Every country has pretty similar problems in varying degrees.

That said - you will need to line up a job first - unless you have ties to the UK or another EU country - moving to the UK from the US is very difficult these days; emigrating from the UK to the US is equally difficult. Start researching the immigration process and work visas.

I like in London England and I don't really like it much. Probably because I've lived here my whole life, but having said that some people who've lived here longer love it, so I don't know.

Living here might have some advantages I'd say, but you'd have to get work in London to earn enough to afford to live :S and London isn't the best part of England(for me anyway) I prefer the countryside

no do NOT move here...the economy is really poor,crime is going through the roof especially in london with knifes...there are some things i like such as the english food and the sport,but thats it!..i would do anything to move abroad.

personally I love the UK, but that's sort of biased because I'm English

I do know that there aren't many good jobs unless you are in a major city

oh and I agree.. the TV is better!

lived here 34years, an i can honestly say as much as i love my friends an family an country, this country is a hovel,its dyin and pathetic and if i could afford to leave id be offf in a shot an if theyd have me back id go to new zealand,by far and away the most beautiful and common sense country i have ever been privileged to visit

I live in the south east of the country and it is full of stuck up toffee nosed snobs. Move to the west or north, they are much more down to earth and friendly there. Avoid London.
