Is the UK considered an island?

Show all answers

I should be doing something else
No - the UK is made up of 4 constituent countries (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales)

England, Scotland and Wales are on the Island of Britain, and Northern Ireland is on the Island of Ireland =]

SeanyA
Hmmmm - so many wrong answers. Why bother even answring if you haven't got a clue.

Namely you Sylvia - Falklands, Gibraltar etc are part of the UK? Beyond Belief!

And NOLA Guy - Since when has Northern Ireland been a province? Idiotic.

To answer your question, no, the UK is not an island and was never and will never be considered so.

Britain is an island, and so is Ireland (of which only the north is part of the UK).

This has been the case ever since the sea levels rose after the last ice age about 10,000 years ago. Before that, you could stroll across to France.

the UK is not just one island, it's a series of islands ... the largest obviously is Great Britain (which is England, Wales and Scotland), then Northern Ireland is on a separate island ... but there's other islands such as the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, all the islands of the Orkneys, Shetland, Hebrides etc etc etc

I haven't a clue how many islands there are altogether

Ryuu!
i think theres just over 3000 islands that make up the UK. The island of Great Britain (which has england, scotland and wales on it) and Northern island which occupies a tiny percentage of the island of Ireland are the most significant areas though. apart from that there are other smaller places like, The Isle Of Wight, The Isle od Man etc etc! =D

Yeah it is made up of thousands of islands but the biggest is Britain and the next is Northern Ireland which is the north half of the Irish Island. So yes and no its not one island but many and a bit of one
England, Wales & Scotland are mostly on the same island but also have many little islands then Northern Island is the northern half of the Irish Island

yes and so is Ireland

Elwood Blues
Yes. Google for the phrase "scept'red Isle"

This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England

From Richard II, Act 2 (Shakespeare)

You will have gathered that the correct, short answer to this question is 'no'. Most people have the right basic idea, but nearly everyone is wrong on detail, sometimes hilariously so (The Falklands, indeed!), and especially about the Isle of Man, which is emphatically not part of the UK. But let's not be boring and nerdy; the correct answer is: no, it's a number of islands plus part of the island of Ireland.

SkinAnInk
Sylvioh... wrong,The Falklands etc are part of the commonwealth not the UK,the UK is an island and just to point out to the lady svylvioh...Wales is the correct spelling in English and I believe Cymru in Welsh.
Many people still think the UK means just England, combined we are "British" I myself am a Yorkshire born Englishman and I rarely refer to myself as being British.

nutterorsaintuchoose
No the uk is alot larger is England northern Ireland Scotland and whales then there are the The Falkland islands, Gibraltar and Jersey are still part of the U.K. Any territory where the queen of England is still the head of state is part of "the common wealth of the U.K."

NOLA guy
The United Kingdom is made up of four constituent entities: England, Scotland Wales, and the province of Northern Ireland. All four are on islands: England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, and Norhern Ireland is on the island of Ireland.

wannabe93
its not considered an island... it is an island
