Is the proposed Low Emission Zone for London a good thing?

It's a step in the right direction. Anybody driving a 4x4 in central London deserves all they get.

No doubt another way to get more money out of Londoners. Fine we all would like to lower pollution in London but not at the expense of all those who live here. Ken Livingstone wants the Congestion charge put in place within the whole of the M25. All that means is that the poor people who have to live in this hell hole have to pay £8.00 to drive, anywhere... I thought that was what road tax was for!

steven e
no,ban all vehicles, back to the horse and cart.

Reducing pollution in London is a good thing. Asthma is a major problem particularly among poorer families. Also, if people have to upgrade to cleaner vehicles, those are also likely to be more fuel-efficient and generally less damaging to the environment. And some people will make the switch from cars to walking, cycling & public transport; also a good thing.

The downside will be for smaller businesses and voluntary groups who will find it difficult to afford to upgrade their vehicles. So it's not going to be totally painless.

But on balance I think it's a good thing.

You know, long ago, I always said that if the Greens got into parliament they would ban cars and have us all on the horse and cart again, everybody told me I was talking daft. The greens are New Labour parliamentarians now, and I might be vindicated soon! All of this low emission, car free areas and bus only zones are just a load crap designed to stop you using your car, because as I say, the greens have joined the Labour party, and they are anti car, it has nothing to do with global warming or emissions, it is just more politically correct mumbo jumbo and it should be laughed out of parliament, such a stupid ridiculous idea!

boring but true
A boring pedantic answer , but you are all answering the wrong question. You are talking about Ken's idea of charging band G cars more in congestion charge zone NOT the Low Emission Zone. It affects older diesel trucks, buses and vans which give out large quanities of particulates and NOx (which causes smog, asthma ..) and is nothing to do with CO2 or cars. It covers ALL of Greater London, not just the Congestion Zone -- and aims to prevent 1000 deaths a year in London NOW, not global warming in the future. Unfortunately the media didnt tell you about any of that , becuase its not as exciting as headlines about 4x4s.....

in my opinion it is just a money spinner
the same as almost every thing in this country
price of fags more money
drinking more money
fuel costs more money
you name it and we are taxed more than any one else
as far as i can see

Simon K
Yes I think it's excellent. You're probably going to get answers from 4 by 4 lovers, but they are all in denial about global warming.
